BUSINESS HEAD – BESS

EXECUTIVE MANDATE
We are seeking a high-calibre BESS industry leader to take complete ownership of the organisation's Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) business and lead it into its next phase of scale, technology leadership and profitable growth.
This is a strategic CXO mandate for a proven BESS business leader, not a conventional General Management, Sales or Operations leadership position.
The incumbent will own the complete BESS product business and its P&L;, with strategic and operational leadership across:
The successful candidate will be expected to bring deep, hands-on industry expertise in BESS / Battery Energy Storage Systems, together with a demonstrated track record of building, scaling and commercially leading a product-centric energy-storage business.
The role requires an individual who understands the BESS ecosystem at both strategic and technical-commercial levels and can translate technology, market dynamics and customer requirements into a scalable and profitable business.
The incumbent will operate with significant autonomy and will be a key member of the senior leadership team with direct access to and accountability before the Board of Directors.
MANDATE OF THE ROLE
The Business Head – BESS will be accountable for creating a market-leading, technology-competitive and financially sustainable BESS business.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. BESS BUSINESS & P&L; LEADERSHIP
- Own the end-to-end P&L; of the BESS business.
- Define and execute the BESS business strategy across short-, medium- and long-term horizons.
- Establish revenue, EBITDA, margin, cash-flow and capital-efficiency objectives.
- Drive business growth through disciplined portfolio, pricing, customer and channel strategies.
- Develop annual operating plans, business budgets and strategic investment priorities.
- Establish a rigorous business-performance management framework.
- Identify structural opportunities to improve margins, cost position and capital efficiency.
- Make strategic decisions on product portfolio, capacity, investments, partnerships and market expansion.
- Present business strategy, financial performance, market outlook and strategic recommendations directly to the Board.
2. BESS MARKET & COMMERCIAL LEADERSHIP
- Own the BESS go-to-market strategy and overall commercial architecture.
- Develop and execute market-entry and market-expansion strategies across relevant BESS applications.
- Build relationships with strategic customers, utilities, renewable-energy players, IPPs, C&I; customers, EPC ecosystem partners and other key BESS stakeholders.
- Lead strategic customer acquisition and high-value commercial engagements.
- Build a high-quality order pipeline aligned with profitability and capacity strategy.
- Establish appropriate pricing, product positioning and commercial models.
- Drive strategic account development and long-term customer relationships.
- Identify emerging BESS applications and convert market opportunities into scalable product propositions.
- Establish the organisation as a credible and differentiated BESS technology and product partner.
3. PRODUCT STRATEGY & PORTFOLIO OWNERSHIP
- Own the BESS product portfolio and product roadmap.
- Translate customer, market and technology requirements into commercially viable product strategies.
- Determine product architecture, configurations,
specifications and positioning in collaboration with Engineering and Technology teams.
- Lead product lifecycle management from concept → development → validation → industrialisation → commercialisation → continuous improvement.

4. TECHNOLOGY & ENGINEERING LEADERSHIP
The incumbent must possess sufficient technical depth to engage with senior engineering and technology teams on the strategic direction of the BESS platform.
Responsibilities include:
- Lead the overall BESS technology and engineering strategy.
- Drive system architecture and product engineering direction.
- Guide development across relevant BESS subsystems and technologies including:
- Battery systems
- Battery Management Systems (BMS)
- Power Conversion Systems (PCS)
- Energy Management Systems (EMS)
- Thermal management
- Fire and safety systems
- Controls and communication systems
- System integration
- Evaluate technology roadmaps and technology risks.
- Develop strategic relationships with technology providers and component OEMs.
- Drive localisation and technology capability development.
- Ensure product engineering is aligned with cost, manufacturability, reliability and customer requirements.
- Establish a culture of technology innovation and continuous product improvement.
5. MANUFACTURING & INDUSTRIALISATION
- Own the strategic manufacturing agenda for the BESS product business.
- Drive industrialisation of new BESS products from engineering through commercial production.
- Develop manufacturing capacity in line with the business and product roadmap.
- Drive manufacturing scalability, productivity and cost competitiveness.
- Establish solid Design-for-Manufacturing and Design-for-Assembly principles.
- Improve manufacturing yields, throughput, quality and asset utilisation.
- Drive manufacturing automation and process improvement wherever commercially justified.
- Ensure manufacturing capability can support rapid business scale-up without compromising quality or delivery performance.
- Establish operational excellence standards across BESS manufacturing.
6. SUPPLY CHAIN & STRATEGIC SOURCING
- Own the strategic direction of the BESS supply-chain ecosystem.
- Build a resilient supply chain for critical cells, modules, PCS, BMS, EMS, thermal systems, enclosures and other key components.
- Develop strategic supplier partnerships and long-term sourcing arrangements.
- Drive supplier qualification, localisation and alternate-source development.
- Build a competitive cost structure through strategic sourcing and value engineering.
- Manage supply-chain risks arising from technology changes, commodity movements, geopolitical dependencies and capacity constraints.
- Optimise inventory, procurement cycles and working capital.
- Align supply-chain strategy with product roadmap and business growth.
7. SERVICES & PRODUCT LIFECYCLE
- Own the strategic direction of BESS product lifecycle services.
- Develop a differentiated after-sales and service proposition.
- Establish warranty, technical-support, preventive-maintenance and remote-monitoring capabilities as applicable.
- Build service infrastructure aligned with the installed product base.
- Develop opportunities for recurring service and lifecycle revenue.
- Use customer and field-performance data to drive product improvement.
- Establish customer experience as a key competitive differentiator.
8. STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS & ECOSYSTEM
- Identify and establish strategic relationships across the BESS ecosystem.
- Develop partnerships with global and domestic:
- Battery technology companies
- Cell / module manufacturers
- PCS / inverter technology providers
- BMS / EMS technology companies
- Component OEMs
- Technology licensors
- Strategic customers
- Evaluate technology partnerships, strategic alliances, JVs and other inorganic opportunities.
- Build an ecosystem that provides competitive advantage in technology, cost, supply security and market access.
9. BUSINESS TRANSFORMATION & SCALE
- Build the BESS business for significant scale rather than incremental growth.
- Develop the organisation's capabilities in line with anticipated business growth.
- Identify structural improvements required across product, technology, manufacturing, commercial and supply-chain functions.
- Establish scalable systems, governance and performance mechanisms.
- Drive continuous improvement in cost, quality, speed, innovation and customer experience.
- Build a business model capable of competing with established domestic and global BESS players.

NON-NEGOTIABLE CANDIDATE PROFILE
Industry Background
The candidate must come from the BESS / Battery Energy Storage Systems industry.
The preferred background would include leadership experience with:
- BESS manufacturers
- Battery Energy Storage System integrators
- Energy-storage product companies
- Battery technology / system companies
- BESS technology companies
- Large-scale energy-storage solution providers
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
Minimum 20+ Years of Professional Experience
With substantial experience in BESS / Battery Energy Storage Systems, including senior leadership responsibility for a product-oriented business.
Mandatory Leadership Experience
The candidate must have previously operated at a senior leadership level such as:
Business Head / President / CEO / Business CEO / COO / CXO / SVP / EVP / Senior Vice President / equivalent BESS business leadership role
with meaningful ownership of business outcomes.
EDUCATION
- Bachelor's / Master's degree in Engineering / Technology is preferred.
- MBA / PGDM from a reputed institution will be an advantage.
- Strong preference for candidates with an educational foundation in Electrical, Electronics, Energy, Power, Mechanical, Chemical or related engineering disciplines.
