Vice President – Contracts

Job Description

Legal & Compliance partners with Blackstone's businesses globally manage legal and regulatory risk and support disciplined, compliant execution.

The Vice President – Contracts will be based in India and serve as the offshore leader for contracts and contract operations activities delivered through Blackstone's India Center of Excellence. The role sits within the Legal & Compliance function and is responsible for overseeing the delivery of contract lifecycle management, contract repository and document management, and related legal operations support for global Legal stakeholders.

This role is designed for a contract lifecycle management and contract operations professional with sound judgment, operational discipline, and team leadership experience. Operating in a global, matrixed environment, the position partners closely with senior in-house counsel, business unit Legal teams, technology partners and alternative legal service providers to support high-quality, well-controlled, and scalable contract operations.

This is a build-out role, with the opportunity to establish the firm's contract operations capability in India and shape its operating model, standards, and technology footprint from inception.

Key Responsibilities

- Provide leadership and accountability for contracts and contract operations activities delivered through the India Center of Excellence in support of global Legal teams.

- Own administration and ongoing management of the firm's contract lifecycle management (CLM) platform, including business administration, configuration and workflow maintenance, user access and permissions, template and clause library upkeep, reporting, and coordination of platform enhancements with technology partners and vendors.

- Lead contract repository and document management support, including repository governance and structure, metadata standards and abstraction quality, data remediation, inventorying of existing contract locations, and establishing a more structured approach to contract storage and retrieval pending full implementation of the firm's document management roadmap.

- Establish and continuously maintain contract-related processes, standard operating procedures, playbooks, process maps and desktop procedures, ensuring documentation remains current as the capability matures.

- Support execution and administration of ancillary, lower-complexity agreements in partnership with business unit Legal teams, including intake triage, routing, version control, signature coordination, execution and post-execution filing.

- Support outside counsel and law firm invoice reconciliation,

including invoice review and validation against engagement terms and billing guidelines, exception identification and follow-up, accrual and reporting support, and maintenance of the associated controls and audit trail.

- Act as the primary offshore liaison to senior in-house counsel, business unit Legal teams and alternative legal service providers (ALSPs), aligning on priorities, capacity, and service expectations.

- Ensure consistent delivery standards, quality, risk management, and operational excellence across all contracts and contract operations activities.

- Serve as an offshore escalation point for complex contract operational, delivery, and risk-related matters.

- Translate contracting priorities into clear operating plans, balancing efficiency and standardization with business-unit-specific, jurisdictional and matter-specific requirements.

- Establish and maintain governance frameworks, service level expectations, performance metrics, management reporting and escalation mechanisms for contracts and contract operations activities.

- Lead and develop a team of contract operations professionals and oversee the performance of ALSP and vendor resources supporting the capability, including transition, knowledge transfer and steady-state delivery.

- Drive continuous improvement initiatives, including process optimization, CLM and legal technology enhancements, contract data quality and analytics, automation opportunities, and operating model improvements.

- Ensure strong controls, documentation, confidentiality standards, records retention and audit readiness across all supported activities.

- Support additional contracts and legal operations requirements as the capability develops; the role is not limited to the activities listed above.

- Partner closely with global stakeholders across time zones and support business needs outside of regular business hours as required.

Qualifications

Blackstone seeks professionals who demonstrate sound judgment, a strong work ethic, and a consistent record of achievement. The successful candidate must have:

Required

- Law degree (LLB, LLM, or equivalent); US JD or LLM from a US-accredited institution strongly preferred. Significant contract management experience in lieu of formal qualification considered.

- 12+ years of experience in contract management, contract lifecycle management, legal operations, in-house legal teams, law firms, ALSPs, or professional services environments, including experience overseeing contract operations functions such as CLM administration, contract abstraction and repository management, contract data and metadata governance, and records management.

- Hands-on experience administering or supporting CLM platforms such as Ironclad, Leah (formerly known as ContractPodAi) DocuSign, including workflow configuration, template and clause library management, user administration, reporting and vendor-supported enhancement cycles.

- Strong understanding of contracting workflows, legal service delivery standards, and in-house legal operations.

- Experience establishing governance frameworks, performance metrics, and operational reporting.

- Sound judgment in legal and operational risk, with a results-oriented execution mindset and strong risk awareness.

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to communicate clearly with global senior stakeholders.

- Proven experience partnering effectively with senior in-house counsel, business stakeholders, and external law firms/ALSPs in a global workplace.

- Ability and willingness to work flexible hours with significant overlap with US Eastern Time.

Preferred

- US JD or LLM from a recognized US institution.

- Experience supporting multi-jurisdictional contract work (EMEA, APAC) in addition to US matters.

- Prior experience in asset management, financial services or a regulated environment, with exposure to commercial, vendor, fund or investment management agreements.
