ICU Nurse Roles & Responsibilities
Job Summary The ICU Nurse is responsible for providing specialized nursing care to critically ill patients, monitoring their condition continuously, administering prescribed treatments, and supporting doctors during emergency and critical care procedures.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to critically ill patients in the ICU.
- Continuously monitor vital signs, patient condition, and clinical parameters.
- Administer medications, IV fluids, blood products, and other treatments as prescribed.
- Operate and monitor ICU equipment including ventilators, infusion pumps, cardiac monitors, and other life-support equipment.
- Assist doctors during procedures, emergency interventions, and resuscitation.
- Identify changes in patient condition and immediately escalate critical findings to the treating physician.
- Maintain accurate and timely patient care documentation and nursing records.
- Follow infection prevention and control protocols, including hand hygiene and aseptic techniques.
- Manage central lines, arterial lines, urinary catheters, drains, and other critical care devices as per protocol.
- Collect specimens and coordinate diagnostic investigations as required.
- Ensure proper medication administration and compliance with the 5 Rights of Medication Administration.
- Participate in patient handovers and communicate relevant clinical information to the incoming shift.
- Provide emotional support and appropriate information to patients and their families.
- Ensure proper positioning, hygiene, nutrition, pressure injury prevention, and overall comfort of patients.
- Maintain readiness for emergency situations and respond promptly to clinical deterioration.
- Maintain ICU equipment, supplies, and emergency medications as per hospital protocols.
- Follow hospital policies, clinical protocols, patient safety standards, and statutory requirements.
- Participate in audits, training programs, quality initiatives, and continuous improvement activities.
Required Skills
- Robust knowledge of critical care nursing practices.
- Ability to handle emergency and high-pressure situations.
- Knowledge of ventilator and cardiac monitor management.
- Good clinical observation and decision-making skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of infection control and patient safety practices.
- Ability to work effectively with doctors and multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
Qualification & Experience
- Qualification: B.Sc. Nursing / GNM
- Experience: 1–8 years in ICU/Critical Care preferred.
- Registration: Valid Nursing Council registration.
- Experience in Pediatric ICU/NICU would be an advantage for pediatric healthcare settings.
