What are we looking for?
We're looking for a highly skilled VFX Roto & Prep Artist with experience working on Hollywood feature films, high-end episodic content, or premium streaming productions. This role is critical to the visual effects pipeline, requiring exceptional attention to detail and a strong understanding of production-quality roto and paint workflows. You'll be responsible for creating accurate roto mattes, clean plates, and preparation work that enables seamless compositing.
Working closely with compositors, match move artists, and supervisors, you'll ensure every shot meets the highest quality standards.
Key responsibilities
Rotoscoping :
Create clean, accurate,
and production-ready roto mattes for characters, props, vehicles, environments, and complex objects.
Handle challenging shots involving motion blur, transparency, fine hair, smoke, reflections, defocus, and intricate edge details.
Produce consistent matte quality across shot sequences while maintaining frame-to-frame continuity.
Optimize roto workflows to support downstream compositing and visual effects tasks.
VFX Prep :
Create high-quality clean plates using paint, patching, cloning, and frame reconstruction techniques.
Remove tracking markers, rigs, wires, unwanted objects, logos, reflections, camera equipment, and production artifacts.
Perform frame repairs and image restoration while preserving texture, lighting, and natural image continuity.
Deliver production-ready preparation work that integrates seamlessly into the compositing pipeline.
Quality & Production :
Review shots for edge quality, matte accuracy, temporal consistency, and paint cleanliness.
Troubleshoot challenging production shots while maintaining high technical standards.
Meet delivery schedules without compromising quality.
Follow studio naming conventions, asset management practices, and production workflows.
Participate in daily reviews and implement creative and technical feedback efficiently.
Communicate shot progress, technical challenges, and estimated completion timelines.
Technical Skills
Strong expertise in production-quality rotoscoping and VFX preparation techniques.
Excellent understanding of edge refinement, motion blur, transparency, defocus, reflections, and semi-transparent elements.
Advanced paint and clean plate creation skills with strong attention to detail.
Solid understanding of the complete VFX pipeline and how roto/prep supports compositing.
Ability to manage high shot volumes while maintaining Hollywood-quality standards.
Solid eye for continuity, image integrity, and visual consistency.
Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently on complex shots.
Software Experience
Foundry Nuke
Silhouette FX
Autodesk Maya (basic understanding is an advantage)
Mocha Pro (good to have)
Adobe Photoshop
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Animation, Motion Graphics, Multimedia, Visual Communication, Design, or a related field.
4–15 years of professional experience in VFX production.
Experience working on Hollywood feature films, premium episodic series, or internationally recognized VFX productions.
Strong demo reel showcasing high-quality roto, paint, clean plate creation, and prep work.
Nice to Have
Experience supporting stereo conversion or high-resolution (4K/8K) workflows.
Familiarity with compositing workflows and CG integration.
Basic understanding of camera tracking and match move pipelines.
Experience working with ACES color management and production delivery standards.
Exposure to AI-assisted paint or roto tools while maintaining strict quality control.
Detail-oriented with a strong eye for edges, continuity, and image quality.
