Role summary:

Cambrian Bioworks is seeking a hands-on chemist to develop and synthesise functionalised magnetic beads for biotechnology applications.

The role covers nanoparticles with magnetic properties and suitable surface functionalisations. The person in this role will be responsible for developing coatings, surface functionalisations, particle characterisation methods, formulation, troubleshooting, scale-up and manufacturing process design.

Key responsibilities

- Synthesise and optimise particles of various surface chemistries.
- Develop amine-, carboxyl-, and other functionalised surfaces.
- Optimise particle size, magnetite content, coating thickness, surface charge, magnetic response and colloidal stability.
- Evaluate polymer composition, crosslinking, hydrophobicity and porosity for application-specific bead behaviour.
- Familiarity with techniques such as DLS, zeta potential, FTIR, SEM/TEM, TGA, ICP-OES/ICP-MS and magnetic-property measurements.
- Design experiments, establish specifications and prepare SOPs, batch records and technical reports.




- Scale up laboratory processes and support transfer to manufacturing and quality control.
- Collaborate with molecular biology R&D;, product-development, quality and manufacturing teams.

Minimum qualifications

- Postgraduate degree—M.Sc., M.Tech., M.S. or equivalent—in inorganic chemistry, materials science, polymer chemistry, nanotechnology, surface/colloid chemistry, applied chemistry, chemical engineering or a related discipline.
- Approximately 3–5 years of relevant industrial or applied research experience.
- Hands-on experience in inorganic particle synthesis, magnetic particles, functionalised micro/nanoparticles or related materials.
- Working knowledge of surface functionalisation chemistry and polymer-core or polymer-coating behaviour.
- Ability to independently design experiments, analyse data and troubleshoot chemical and process-related problems.
