Senior Mechanical Design Engineer with a passion for innovation, problem-solving and next-generation product development. The ideal candidate will bring strong analytical and technical design skills, with a proven track record in the design of high-performance, energetic electromechanical systems subjected to continuous movement, complex structural loading and varied environmental conditions. Expertise in precision mechanism design, advanced structural and thermal analysis and optimization for rapid field deployment is essential.
This role offers the opportunity to lead complex R&D; initiatives while working collaboratively within a fast-paced, multidisciplinary engineering team to bring complex mobile systems from concept to field operations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design and develop complex, high-reliability mechanical components, cable-driven or rail-mounted guidance mechanisms and multi-axis stabilized systems.
- Design ruggedized, IP65/IP68-rated and pressure-sealed enclosures capable of operating reliably in harsh, wet, or fully submerged environments.
- Conduct rigorous static and dynamic load analysis, structural optimization and thermal expansion/contraction studies to ensure system stability under high-velocity or variable-temperature operations.
- Optimize mechanical designs for ergonomics, portability and rapid, tool-less rigging and derigging in time-critical field environments.
- Create precise 3D CAD models and detailed technical drawings using industry-standard CAD tools, ensuring strict compliance with manufacturing and safety standards.
- Lead prototyping efforts and select optimal materials (e.g., advanced alloys, composites) to balance structural strength, weight minimization, corrosion resistance and thermal stability.
- Collaborate closely with electronics, robotics and software engineering teams to ensure seamless integration of drive systems, slip rings,
sensors and payload stabilization components.
- Oversee comprehensive environmental, structural and operational testing. Prepare detailed documentation for manufacturing, assembly, field deployment procedures and quality assurance.
Desired Skill and Competencies Sets
- Strong expertise in precision mechanical design, including multi-axis gimbals, dynamic seals (O-rings, rotary seals), pressure vessels and ruggedized enclosures for harsh environments.
- Deep understanding of structural mechanics with hands-on experience in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for static/dynamic loading, vibration isolation, fatigue life and thermal expansion studies.
- Strong knowledge of Design for Manufacturing, Assembly and Field Operationsspecifically designing for quick-connect mechanisms, modularity and high-vibration environments.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling (e.g., SolidWorks, Creo) and advanced tolerance stack-up analysis. Expert knowledge of GD&T; (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) and industry technical drawing standards (ASME, ISO).
- In-depth knowledge of metallurgy, high strength/lightweight composites, anodization and anti-corrosion treatments for outdoor and underwater exposure.
- Practical experience with diverse manufacturing processes including CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, carbon fiber molding and additive manufacturing.
- A strong mindset for troubleshooting complex kinetic, structural and thermal challenges in high-performance applications.
- Focus on the end-user experience, ensuring equipment is intuitive, safe and efficient to deploy under tight schedules.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively bridge mechanical requirements with electronics, software and field operational teams.
- Proven ability to manage timelines, prioritize safety-critical tasks and adapt quickly in a fast-paced, research-driven product development environment.
