Woofya is a veterinary technology startup building the care continuity layer between clinics and pet owners. We have an established care plan, tracking, and notification platform already in production. We're now building the AI layer on top of it, and we need a senior engineer to own that work end-to-end.
This is an equity-only role, no salary. If you need to be paid from day one, this isn't the right fit. If you want real technical ownership in a company with a explicit expansion path into a large regulated market, keep reading.
What you'll ownYou will be the primary engineer responsible for designing, building, and shipping Woofya's AI product suite. The work spans:
- AI assistants - messaging-based tools that communicate with end users within strict clinical boundaries, using only practitioner-provided information
- Document-to-structure pipelines - ingesting unstructured clinical notes and producing structured, editable care plans
- Insight generation - analysing tracking data to surface patterns, trends, and flags for practitioners
- Multi-agent orchestration - routing diverse user queries to specialist sub-agents with appropriate guardrails, confidence thresholds, and human escalation
- Health data security - encryption, access controls, audit logging, and architecture that can withstand regulatory scrutiny
You'll be building on an existing backend with an established data model - not starting from scratch. But the AI layer, agent architecture,
and integration decisions are yours to make. What we're looking forMust have:
- Production LLM applications in contexts where accuracy and output safety genuinely matter
- Strong backend engineering - Node.js and/or Python, APIs, webhooks, async processing
- Experience handling sensitive data in regulated or compliance-adjacent environments
- Security fundamentals: encryption at rest and in transit, access controls, audit logging
- Messaging or real-time communication platform integration
- Ability to own a project from architecture through deployment without waiting for a spec
Strong advantage:
- AI systems built for human health: telehealth, EHR, clinical decision support, patient communication
- Familiarity with HIPAA, Australian Privacy Act, or ISO 27001
- Multi-agent / swarm architecture experience
- Document ingestion and clinical entity extraction
- NLP beyond prompt engineering
We're building for veterinary now. The architecture should be built to a human healthcare standard, so that expansion is a natural step, not a rebuild. Experience in regulated health environments will set you apart. What kind of person this is forSomeone who will look at our current approach and tell us what's wrong with it. We don't want an engineer who waits for a spec. We want someone who writes the spec, challenges assumptions, identifies risks, and makes build/buy/skip decisions the way a technical co-founder would.
