- Position Summary

Hanuman Prasad Poddar Cancer Hospital & Research Institute invites applications for the position of Medical Officer (M.B.B.S.) with well-versed knowledge and clinical understanding of cancer pain assessment and management, including relevant ICMR guidelines, protocols, policies, and evidence-based practices.

The Medical Officer will be responsible for providing safe, compassionate, and patient-centred medical care to cancer patients, with particular emphasis on the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and documentation of cancer-related pain and associated symptoms.

- Key Responsibilities

- Conduct comprehensive clinical assessment of cancer patients presenting with acute, chronic, breakthrough, or treatment-related pain.
- Assess pain using appropriate clinical pain assessment tools and document pain severity, characteristics, duration, and impact on quality of life.
- Develop and implement appropriate pain-management plans under the supervision of the concerned consultant/specialist.
- Demonstrate sound knowledge of ICMR-recommended cancer pain management protocols, policies, and evidence-based guidelines.
- Understand the principles of pharmacological and non-pharmacological management of cancer pain.
- Have working knowledge of appropriate use, dose titration, monitoring, and adverse effects of analgesics, including opioids, non-opioid analgesics, and adjuvant medications.
- Recognize and appropriately manage common opioid-related adverse effects and identify patients requiring specialist review.
- Assess and respond appropriately to breakthrough pain, neuropathic pain, visceral pain, bone pain, and treatment-related pain.
- Identify red-flag symptoms and emergencies such as spinal cord compression, pathological fractures, raised intracranial pressure, severe uncontrolled pain, and other oncological emergencies.
- Coordinate with consultants, nursing staff, palliative-care teams, pharmacists, psychologists, and other multidisciplinary professionals for comprehensive patient care.
- Monitor patients receiving analgesic and supportive medications and promptly report clinically significant changes to the treating consultant.
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical records, medication charts, pain assessments, treatment plans, and follow-up documentation.
- Ensure appropriate compliance with hospital policies concerning prescribing, storage, administration, monitoring, and documentation of controlled/essential medicines, including opioid analgesics.




- Provide counselling to patients and caregivers regarding pain management, medication adherence, expected benefits, possible adverse effects, and when to seek medical attention.
- Participate in outpatient, inpatient, emergency, ward, and/or palliative-care services as assigned.
- Assist in developing and maintaining standardized pain-management practices within the hospital.
- Participate in clinical audits, quality-improvement initiatives, academic activities, case discussions, and continuing medical education related to cancer pain and palliative care.
- Maintain professional ethics, patient confidentiality, infection-control practices, and hospital safety standards.
- Perform any other clinical responsibilities assigned by the Medical Superintendent or Head of Department.

3. Essential Qualifications
- M.B.B.S. from a recognized medical institution/university.
- Valid registration with the National Medical Commission (NMC) / relevant State Medical Council, as applicable.
- Sound clinical knowledge of general medicine and the management of common medical conditions in cancer patients.
- Good working knowledge of cancer pain assessment and management.
- Familiarity with ICMR guidelines/protocols and applicable national policies relating to cancer pain management and palliative care.
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary oncology/palliative-care environment.

4. Desirable Qualifications / Experience
- Experience working in a cancer hospital, oncology unit, palliative-care service, hospice, or tertiary-care hospital.
- Certificate/Diploma/Fellowship/Training in Palliative Medicine, Pain Medicine, Oncology, or Cancer Care will be preferred.
- Prior experience in opioid prescribing and monitoring in accordance with applicable regulations and institutional policies.
- Experience in managing patients with advanced/metastatic cancer and complex symptom burden.
- Participation in ICMR/NMC-recognized or other reputable continuing medical education programmes related to pain or palliative care.

- National policies and regulatory requirements concerning cancer pain and palliative care
- Institutional policies and standard operating procedures for analgesic and opioid use
- Evidence-based principles of the WHO analgesic approach and contemporary cancer pain management
- Patient-safety, medication-safety, and controlled-medicine documentation requirements

7. Key Performance Areas (KPIs)
- Timely and appropriate assessment of cancer pain.
- Adherence to approved clinical protocols and institutional policies.
- Safe and rational prescribing and monitoring of analgesic medications.
- Accurate clinical and medication documentation.
- Appropriate escalation of complex or uncontrolled pain to the treating consultant/pain or palliative-care specialist.
- Patient and caregiver satisfaction with communication and symptom-management support.
- Participation in clinical audits, training, and quality-improvement programmes.

8. Working Conditions The Medical Officer may be required to work in inpatient wards, outpatient clinics, emergency services, palliative-care units, and other designated clinical areas. The position may involve rotational duties, night shifts, weekends, and on-call responsibilities, depending on hospital requirements.
