Purpose

This role is responsible for providing mechanical layout design support to the Projects team, while working closely with the other engineering disciplines (Electrical, Controls, software & manufacturing) to ensure multi-disciplinary integrated engineering solutions.

For the project department, this role provides all the layout and support structure drawings required for client approval, manufacturing take-off and site construction. The incumbent must ensure the design satisfies the contract and the technical specification and is also expected to liaise with the manufacturing staff regarding the design and scope of the mechanical equipment supply. Throughout the duration of the project, general mechanical related inquiries are directed to this role.

Occasionally, a Mechanical Design Engineer will be required to support the Sales team and / or the Marketing team.

Key Performance Areas

Project Setup

- Revise contracted specification, scope of work and non-compliance list at the sales handover stage. Investigate local standards
- Confirmed and clear understanding of project specification and all local standards.

Design

- Provide mechanical design support and layout drawing in accordance with the contract and specifications from project kick off to completion.
- Accurate and complete drawings to project manager as per project schedule for client approval and site installation.

Support Steel Design

- Perform calculations and produce detailed design for support structure for conveyors. Coordinate with professional engineer and sub-contractors during the design, fabrication and installation stages.
- Accurate and complete detailed structural steel fabrication drawings, sufficient for construction purpose.

Project Specials

- Produce any detailed product drawings for project specific one-off special. Consideration for ease of manufacturing should be taken into account.
- Accurate and complete detailed product drawings and associate DXFs for one-off project special equipment.

Manifest / Take offs

- Produce manifests for procurement and manufacturing purpose.
- Accurate and complete mechanical manufacturing take off, motor and belt manifest as per project schedule.

As Builts

- As part of the As Built submission, update design and drawings to reflect the adjustment and changes made during the installation.
- Accurate and complete As Built drawings in the specified format and quantity.





Quality Manual

- Follow company process as per the company quality manual.
- Process and procedures aligned with ISO standards.

Update

- Regularly update document transmittal and project folder (hard copy and network) of all drawings issues/revisions and communication with client and project manager.
- Up to date record of design request and drawing issue/revision in both hard and electronic copies.

Process and checking

- Complete projects as per department process flow and use check sheets at relevant stages in the process.
- Level 2 designers must have all non-standard work checked by a more senior designer but can also request checks as required.
- Project completion within budget. Information delivered to the customer (internal and external) is accurate and to company standard.

General

- Communicate regularly with other members of the project / bid team and be proactive in seeking necessary information to complete the design.
- Inform Mechanical Design Manager regarding any project variation, task completion, budget overrun and potential for project delay.
- Update timesheets daily.
- Actively participate in health and safety matters
- Prompt and accurate information for design throughout the project / bid. Inform Mechanical Design Manager if no success after a few attempts.
- Mechanical Design Manager is well informed of any workload, design budget and schedule related issues.
- Project costs captured in real time.

Technical Expertise and Mentoring

Conveyor Specification Software

- Conveyor specification using conveyor design software including administration, trouble shooting and continuous improvement.
- Solve problems and general inquiries raised by others. Handle customised equipment addition and alteration. Manage changes and improvements with software team.

Quality Management System

- Play an active role in the company QMS system (ECR / NCR / OFI).




- Raise improvements, process assigned improvements and promote the QMS.

Conveyor Block

- Conveyor block creation, administration, and update.
- Regular update of conveyor building blocks. Blocks in line with latest product development and product changes via the ECR process.

CAD Administration

- Promote and maintain AutoCAD drawing standards and best practices.
- All AutoCAD layout designers follow standards and best practices.

Documentation Creation

- Documentation of departmental processes and guidelines using standard templates, document naming, and numbering conventions.
- Rules based standards ensuring a consistent output from the team.

Health, Safety and Environment

- Actively participate in health and safety matters.

Quality

- Play an active role in the continuous improvement. Identify issues or improvements with product or systems. Raise required changes through the company continuous improvement process (ECR / NCR / OFI).

Person Profile

- Tertiary qualification in mechanical engineering
- Demonstrated design experience and skills in a project and medium – heavy engineering environment
- A minimum of 7 to 10 years BHS / Industry experience
- Sound planning and organising skills including time management
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to interact with others at all levels
- Experience working as part of a team with the ability to build robust, positive relationships and to work with multiple stakeholders
- Process driven approach to project work
- Analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail
- Sound commercial acumen
