Job Title:
CNC Lathe Operator
Department: Production
Reporting To: CNC Lathe Team Leader / Production Supervisor
Job Summary The CNC Lathe Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and monitoring CNC lathe machines to manufacture precision components as per engineering drawings, specifications, and quality requirements. The role involves machine setup, tool selection, inspection of machined parts, routine machine maintenance, and ensuring production targets are achieved safely and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
Production Operations
- Set up and operate CNC lathe machines according to production requirements.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, work orders, process sheets, and technical specifications.
- Select appropriate cutting tools, inserts, fixtures, and measuring instruments for machining operations.
- Perform machine setup and make necessary adjustments to achieve specified dimensions and tolerances.
- Monitor machine performance during operation and ensure uninterrupted production.
Quality Control
- Inspect machined components using precision measuring instruments such as:
- Vernier Calipers
- Micrometers
- Bore Gauges
- Height Gauges
- Dial Indicators
- Thread Gauges
- Ensure all components meet customer and quality requirements.
- Identify and report non-conforming products and process deviations.
- Maintain quality records and inspection reports as required.
Machine Maintenance
- Conduct routine machine cleaning and lubrication.
- Monitor tool wear and replace inserts and cutting tools when required.
- Perform basic preventive maintenance activities.
- Report machine breakdowns, abnormalities, or maintenance requirements to the Team Leader or Maintenance Department.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all company safety policies and standard operating procedures.
- Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
at all times while working.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Comply with quality management systems and manufacturing standards.
Continuous Improvement
- Support productivity, quality, and cost improvement initiatives.
- Suggest process improvements to reduce cycle time, scrap, and machine downtime.
- Participate in training and skill development programs.
Authority
- Operate assigned CNC lathe machines.
- Stop production in case of quality or safety concerns.
- Request tooling, fixtures, and maintenance support as required.
Accountability
- Production output as per schedule.
- Product quality and dimensional accuracy.
- Proper machine setup and operation.
- Tool management and machine upkeep.
- Adherence to safety and company procedures.
- Minimization of rejection, rework, and machine downtime.
Qualifications
Education
- ITI / Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, or related field.
- CNC Machining certification preferred.
Experience
- Minimum 2 to 5 years of experience operating CNC Lathe Machines in a manufacturing setting.
- Experience in precision machining and aerospace/automotive components preferred.
Required Skills
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and GD&T.;
- Knowledge of CNC lathe machine operations and machining processes.
- Proficiency in using precision measuring instruments.
- Understanding of cutting tools, inserts, feeds, and speeds.
- Basic knowledge of CNC programs and offsets.
- Strong attention to detail and quality consciousness.
- Good problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
