Position Overview

We are seeking a Lead / Principal Power BI Developer to serve as the single technical owner for Power BI reporting within the BI & Reporting function of a global reinsurance technology environment.

This is a highly hands-on senior role responsible for the end-to-end technical delivery of Power BI dashboards, reports, datasets, and semantic models, including new development, enhancements, production support, performance optimisation, and controlled deployments.

The role will primarily use an Operational Data Store (ODS2) as the core reporting source and requires strong expertise in Power BI, advanced DAX, SQL, data modelling, performance tuning, and production support.

The successful candidate will establish and maintain Power BI development standards, ensure reporting reliability and scalability, and independently own technical delivery without reliance on other Power BI developers.

The role works closely with a Senior Business Analyst / Data Analyst who will lead stakeholder engagement, requirements gathering, UAT coordination, and business validation. The Power BI Developer will own the technical design, development, troubleshooting, testing, deployment, and ongoing maintenance of reporting solutions.

Key Responsibilities

1. Power BI Technical Ownership

- Act as the technical owner and subject matter expert for Power BI reporting.
- Establish and maintain technical standards, development patterns, and best practices across Power BI assets.

1. Power BI Development & Delivery

- Design and develop complex dashboards, reports, datasets, and semantic models using Power BI.
- Translate business requirements into scalable and user-friendly reporting solutions.
- Develop advanced DAX measures, calculations, KPIs, and business logic.
- Design reusable and high-performance semantic models.
- Analyse feasibility, data availability, modelling approaches, and performance considerations during solution discovery.

- Develop prototypes and POCs where required to validate technical approaches.
- Modify and enhance existing Power BI reports and dashboards based on evolving business requirements.

1. SQL, ODS & Data Modelling

- Use ODS2 / Operational Data Store as the primary reporting data source.
- Develop complex and optimised SQL queries for enterprise reporting.




- Perform SQL performance tuning and troubleshoot inefficient queries.
- Work with views, stored procedures, joins, aggregations, and other SQL-based data structures.
- Apply dimensional modelling principles to create consistent, reliable, and maintainable reporting solutions.

- Partner with data stakeholders to resolve data-quality issues and clarify business definitions.
- Assess the impact of upstream data changes on reporting assets.
- Implement validation and reconciliation mechanisms to ensure accuracy and reliability of reporting outputs.

1. Production Support & Operational Excellence

- Own production support for Power BI reporting solutions.

1. Stakeholder Collaboration

- Work closely with Business Analysts, Data Analysts, Technology teams, and business stakeholders.
- Provide technical guidance on data availability, report behaviour, modelling decisions, and system limitations.
- Explain complex technical concepts and data logic in a clear, stakeholder-friendly manner.
- Support UAT by resolving technical issues and providing necessary clarification.
- Develop and maintain technical documentation and user guides.

- Collaborate with global stakeholders across multiple time zones when required.

Required Qualifications &

Experience

Experience

- Bachelor's degree in IT, Engineering, Computer Science, Data, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 8+ years of professional BI / reporting experience in enterprise environments.
- 6+ years of hands-on Power BI experience.
- Strong experience in Power BI semantic modelling and advanced DAX.
- 6+ years of strong SQL experience, including query optimisation and performance tuning.




- Proven experience as a technical owner / SME for BI or reporting platforms.
- Experience establishing BI development standards, technical governance, and best practices.
- Strong experience handling production support, troubleshooting, enhancements, and end-to-end BI delivery.
- Mandatory: Prior experience working with insurance or reinsurance data.
