Forward Deployed Engineer โ€” Healthcare AI

Job Function: Engineering โ€” Forward Deployed / Solutions Engineering

Industry: Healthcare Technology ยท Artificial Intelligence ยท Digital Health

Experience Level: Mid-Senior (5+ years)

Employment Type: Full-time

Location: Coimbatore/Chennai (Onsite)

About the Role

Value Health builds AI systems that sit inside the real, messy infrastructure of healthcare โ€” EMRs, EHRs, payer systems, and the benefit-verification processes that determine whether a patient can actually get the care they need. As a Forward Deployed Engineer, you'll take that technology out of the demo and into production at a specific health system, payer, or provider group: writing the code yourself, integrating directly with their EHR and eligibility/benefit systems, and staying accountable until it's actually running and trusted.

This role starts before the build does. You'll spend real time figuring out what's actually broken in a customer's workflow โ€” which is often different from what they first ask for โ€” before you write a line of code. That means this isn't a solutions-architecture role that hands off a diagram, and it isn't a customer-success role that manages a relationship without touching code.

It's closer to a product/leader-mindset engineer embedded in the account: you diagnose the problem, design the solution, ship the production code, and stay accountable until it's running and trusted. And because this work touches PHI, prior authorizations, and benefit determinations, doing it right means compliance and auditability are part of the engineering itself, not something reviewed in afterward.

What You'll Do

โ— Get to the real problem first. Talk directly to clinicians, ops staff,

and IT teams to figure out what's actually costing them time or money โ€” not just what they initially asked for โ€” and be willing to push back or reshape the ask when the two don't match.

โ— Own end-to-end delivery of a customer deployment: discovery, technical scoping, system design, build, and production rollout.

โ— Build and maintain integrations with customer EMR/EHR systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner, athenahealth) and eligibility/benefit-verification data sources, using HL7, FHIR, and payer-side data exchange formats (e.g., EDI 270/271 for eligibility, X12 claims formats).

โ— Design and ship AI-powered workflows for use cases like benefit verification, prior authorization, clinical documentation support, and patient-support communications, with PHI handling, access controls, and auditability built in from day one.

โ— Write and ship production code across the stack โ€” this is a hands-on engineering role, not a hand-off role.

โ— Build evaluation frameworks and monitoring so both you and the customer can trust what's shipped, and can prove it when asked.

โ— Debug production issues at partner sites, often same-day.

โ— Turn recurring problems and patterns from the field into reusable internal tools, playbooks, and โ€” where it makes sense โ€” permanent product features; document integration patterns so the next engineer moves faster than you did.

โ— Bring what you find directly into product and engineering planning. You'll often be the first person to see where the platform โ€” or the roadmap โ€” needs to change.

What You'll Need

โ— 5+ years of qualified software engineering experience,

including production systems you've built and operated โ€” not just prototypes or personal projects.

โ— Hands-on, production experience building AI/LLM-powered systems โ€” RAG pipelines, prompt engineering, and evaluation frameworks that catch regressions before they ship.

โ— Experience monitoring AI/LLM systems in production, since outputs here affect real clinical and financial decisions and need to hold up to scrutiny.

โ— Full-stack or integration-engineering fluency in Python and/or TypeScript, working across APIs, relational databases, and cloud infrastructure.

โ— Direct experience integrating with third-party systems you don't control โ€” EHR/EMR vendors, payer or clearinghouse APIs, or comparably complex enterprise systems.

โ— Working fluency in healthcare data and process vocabulary โ€” HL7, FHIR, HIPAA/PHI, ICD-10, and eligibility, benefit-verification, or prior-authorization workflows. If these terms are already familiar to you, that's exactly the signal we're looking for.

โ— A product-minded problem-solver โ€” you diagnose the actual pain point in a customer's workflow before proposing a build, and you're comfortable telling a customer (or your own team) that the requested feature isn't the real fix.

โ— Real customer-facing experience โ€” you've run technical conversations directly with a client's engineers or leadership, not just received requirements secondhand from a PM.

โ— Comfort operating with incomplete information, changing requirements, and no fully-specified ticket to work from.

Nice to Have, Not Required

โ— Direct experience with specific EHR platforms (Epic, Cerner, athenahealth, InterSystems) or payer eligibility systems.

โ— Background in medical coding, revenue cycle management (RCM), or health information management.

โ— Prior startup, founder, or 0-to-1 building experience.
