Role Description The DevOps Engineer role at SimpleChime is a full-time remote position focused on building, maintaining, and optimizing the infrastructure that powers our healthcare communication platform. In this role, the DevOps Engineer will design and manage cloud environments, implement and maintain Infrastructure as Code, and ensure system reliability, scalability, and security. Day-to-day responsibilities include collaborating with software engineers to set up and improve continuous integration and delivery pipelines, monitoring system performance, automating routine operations, and troubleshooting production issues.
The DevOps Engineer will also participate in incident response, refine deployment processes, and help define best practices for system administration and platform resilience in a healthcare context.
Responsibilities
- Design, provision, and maintain AWS infrastructure using Terraform (IaC)
- Manage GitHub repositories, branching strategy, and CI/CD pipelines
- Build and maintain JIRA automation to support engineering workflows
- Own Lambda-based serverless architecture, including SQS, API Gateway, and CloudWatch
- Manage ECS Fargate deployments for containerized services
- Design and enforce IAM policies, with particular attention to multi-tenant data isolation
- Administer PostgreSQL (multi-schema: charge, conversation, appointment, user)
- Manage Redis for distributed locking and session/UID handling
- Support pgvector infrastructure for AI-driven patient context search
- Manage Cognito custom auth flows
- Own HIPAA/BAA-aligned infrastructure practices: PHI transmission safeguards, IP allowlisting, secure handling of unauthenticated API endpoints
- Configure and maintain Site-to-Site VPN connectivity for third-party system integrations (e.g., MIRTH HL7)
- Manage TLS/SSL certificate provisioning and renewal across custom domains and service endpoints
- Build out CI/CD pipeline tooling (GitHub Actions or equivalent)
- Implement observability and cost-monitoring practices, including CloudWatch Logs Insights for usage and cost analysis
Required Skills
- Strong AWS experience: Lambda, SQS, API Gateway, CloudWatch, ECS Fargate, IAM
- Terraform (production IaC experience, not just tutorials)
- GitHub (repo management, Actions/CI-CD)
- JIRA administration and automation
- PostgreSQL administration
- Redis
- Certificate/TLS management
- VPN configuration (Site-to-Site or equivalent)
Strongly Preferred
- Experience in a HIPAA-regulated environment (PHI handling, BAAs, compliance-driven architecture)
- Snowflake and/or Metabase (or similar BI/reporting stack)
- Cognito or comparable auth service experience
- Familiarity with multi-tenant SaaS architecture and tenant isolation patterns
- Hands-on AI/ML experience (LLM integration, prompt engineering, or AI-assisted infra tooling)
- Strong AWS cost monitoring and optimization experience (cost allocation, budgets/alerts, right-sizing serverless workloads)
