The practice

Unheard_Of is a design practice rooted in Narrative Thinking. It begins from a specific claim about what design is: that the real object of design is not the surface but the structure of meaning. Meaning has a structure. And that structure, not the style laid over it, is the thing we design.

The rest follows from there. We treat narrative as infrastructure: not a story told on the surface, but the load-bearing frame that decides how an idea is organized, sequenced, related, and made navigable. Identity, language, interface, argument. Everything else runs on it. And we don’t represent ideas, we enact them.

We don’t chase trends. Trends govern surfaces; we work a layer beneath them. Style matters, but it has to be exact. Here it is a consequence of the idea, not a substitute for one. That’s what frees the surface to be whatever the idea needs instead of whatever the moment is wearing, and what lets the work outlast the moment it was made in.

We work with technically sophisticated organizations — advanced energy, emissions compliance, AI infrastructure, biotech — whose thinking has outpaced the language they have to describe it. We’re a current practice founded by two design veterans, logically emerging from a decade-old traditional design house. The experience is established. The methodology is new. We’re building a small, elite team to develop it.

What we mean by “designer”

Not a graphic designer. Not a UI/UX designer.

We mean designer in the larger sense:



someone who gives meaning a structure and then builds forms that carry it.

Visual craft matters, but it’s downstream. The work is designing how an idea holds together and how someone comes to understand it. The artifact is whatever that thinking requires: an identity, an argument, a system, an interface.

If your identity is tied to a surface, this isn’t it. If it’s tied to how meaning is built, it might be.

Represent, or enact

Say the idea is that a set of fragmented things becomes one.

To represent it, you’d design something that says so: a mark that resolves, a line like “brought together,” slides that state the unification.

To enact it, you’d build the thing so its own structure performs the convergence: an identity system whose parts only resolve in relation to each other, an argument the reader feels assembling as they go, an interface where understanding the idea and moving through it are the same act.

The second is the job. Representation describes the idea from a safe distance. Enactment puts the audience inside its logic.

Who you are

You already think this way, even if you haven’t named it.

You look for the structure of an idea before its surface. You can tell the difference between meaning and the information around it. You don’t decorate a brief; you interrogate it, digest it, and reframe it through your insight, taste, and experience. You stay restless until the thinking resolves, and you know that when you can’t articulate an idea, the idea isn’t finished yet.

You can put an idea into words. Not as copywriting, and not as a handoff to someone else, but as the way you find and test the thinking: a complex thought stated plainly, language that sets the structure the design will enact.

This isn’t for you if

2. You think of narrative as a layer added on top.
3. You judge the work first by how it looks.
