GRINDING SUPERVISOR

Position: Grinding Supervisor

Reporting To: Production Manager / Plant Head

Job Purpose To supervise and control day-to-day grinding production activities, ensuring production targets, quality standards, machine utilization, and safety requirements are achieved efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

- Supervise and manage daily grinding production activities as per the production plan.
- Allocate manpower and machines according to production requirements.
- Monitor Cylindrical Grinding, Centerless Grinding, Internal Grinding (ID), External Grinding (OD), Surface Grinding, and related operations.
- Ensure proper machine setting, tool selection, grinding wheel selection, dressing, and process parameters.
- Monitor production output, cycle time, rejection, rework, and machine downtime.
- Ensure components are produced as per drawing, specification, tolerance, and quality standards.
- Coordinate with the Quality, Maintenance, Tool Room, and Production Planning teams to resolve production issues.
- Identify and reduce grinding-related defects such as dimensional variation, taper, roundness, surface finish, burning, chatter marks, and grinding cracks.
- Ensure proper inspection of components using micrometer, bore gauge, vernier caliper, height gauge, dial gauge, and other measuring instruments.
- Monitor and maintain process parameters and ensure adherence to standard operating procedures.
- Prepare and maintain daily production reports, rejection reports, downtime reports, and shift handover records.
- Train and guide operators and setters on machine operation, process control, quality, and safety.
- Ensure optimum utilization of manpower, machines, tools, grinding wheels, and consumables.
- Follow preventive maintenance requirements and immediately report machine abnormalities to the Maintenance Department.
- Ensure proper handling, storage, and dressing of grinding wheels as per safety requirements.




- Maintain good housekeeping and implement 5S practices in the grinding area.
- Ensure compliance with company safety procedures and PPE requirements.
- Support continuous improvement activities such as Kaizen, productivity improvement, rejection reduction, and cost reduction.
- Monitor shift-wise production performance and take corrective action for deviations.
- Ensure proper shift handover and communicate pending issues to the next shift.
- Maintain discipline and ensure effective manpower utilization within the department.

Technical Skills
- Valuable knowledge of Grinding Machine Operations and Processes.
- Knowledge of Cylindrical, Centerless, ID, OD, and Surface Grinding.
- Knowledge of grinding wheel selection, dressing, balancing, and grinding parameters.
- Ability to read and understand engineering drawings and GD&T;.
- Knowledge of dimensional inspection and measuring instruments.
- Knowledge of production planning, process control, rejection analysis, and productivity improvement.
- Basic knowledge of 5S, Kaizen, TPM, and Lean Manufacturing.
- Good problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.

Qualification
- Diploma / ITI in Mechanical / Production / Manufacturing Engineering or equivalent.
- Additional technical qualifications in grinding or precision machining will be an advantage.

Experience
- 5–10 years of relevant experience in grinding operations.
- Minimum 2–3 years of experience in a supervisory role in an engineering / automobile manufacturing environment.
- Experience handling operators, setters, production targets, quality issues, and machine-related problems.
