A Mechanical Head of Department (HOD) is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing mechanical operations, maintenance, or academic programs. The specific responsibilities depend entirely on whether the role is based in an industrial manufacturing plant or an engineering educational institution. Option 1: Industrial / Manufacturing HOD In heavy industries like steel, ferro alloys, or power, the Mechanical HOD leads maintenance, boosts plant reliability, and ensures continuous production.

- Job Summary: Leads all mechanical-related maintenance, equipment reliability, and operational activities across the facility.

- Key Responsibilities:
- Maintenance Management: Develop and implement preventive and predictive maintenance strategies to reduce equipment downtime and increase lifespan.
- Team Leadership: Manage a team of mechanical engineers, technicians, and contractors.
- Cost Control: Optimize maintenance budgets, monitor spare parts inventory, and control operational costs.
- Safety Compliance: Enforce strict safety protocols (e.g., OSHA/plant standards) and conduct incident investigations.

- Requirements:
- Education: B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical or Production Engineering.
- Experience: 8 to 15+ years in heavy industry (e.g., steel melting shops, wind power, or mills).
- Key Skills: Equipment troubleshooting, resource management,



and strategic planning.

Option 2: Academic / University HOD In academia, the Mechanical HOD bridges teaching, research, and department administration, focusing on curriculum and student outcomes.

- Job Summary: Responsible for guiding the academic, research, and administrative activities of the mechanical engineering department.

- Key Responsibilities:
- Curriculum & Accreditation: Ensure course curricula meet industry standards and regulatory compliance (e.g., AICTE, NBA, or NAAC).
- Faculty Development: Oversee the recruitment, mentoring, and performance evaluation of departmental faculty.
- Student Success: Coordinate internships, industrial visits, and placement opportunities.
- Research & Development: Promote faculty and student research, patent filings, and externally funded projects.

- Requirements:
- Education: M.Tech / M.E. in Mechanical Engineering; Ph.D. is highly preferred.
- Experience: 8 to 12+ years of combined teaching and academic administrative experience.
