Staff Nurse – OT Job Description

Position: Staff Nurse – Operation Theatre (OT)
Department: Operation Theatre
Reports To: OT In-charge / Nursing Superintendent / Medical Director

Job Summary

Responsible for providing safe and efficient nursing care before, during, and after surgical procedures, while assisting the surgical and anesthesia teams and maintaining OT standards.

Key Responsibilities
- Prepare the OT, instruments, equipment, and required consumables before procedures.
- Assist surgeons and anesthetists during surgical procedures.
- Perform pre-operative and post-operative nursing care.
- Maintain strict aseptic and infection-control practices.
- Assist with surgical instrument and sponge counts.
- Handle and maintain OT instruments and equipment appropriately.
- Prepare and administer medications as per doctor’s orders.
- Monitor patients’ vital signs and condition during and after procedures.
- Ensure proper specimen collection, labeling, and handover to the laboratory.
- Maintain accurate OT records, nursing notes, checklists, and documentation.




- Ensure availability of emergency drugs, supplies, and equipment.
- Coordinate with doctors, anesthesia team, housekeeping, and other departments.
- Follow hospital policies, patient-safety protocols, and infection-control guidelines.
- Ensure proper cleaning, sterilization, and turnover of the OT after each procedure.
- Participate in emergency procedures and provide support during complications.
- Maintain patient privacy, dignity, and confidentiality.

Qualifications
- GNM / B.Sc. Nursing from a recognized institution.
- Valid nursing registration.
- Previous OT experience preferred.
- Knowledge of surgical procedures, aseptic techniques, and infection control.
