Job Summary

The Ambulance Driver is responsible for the safe, timely, and efficient transportation of patients, particularly women, newborns, and pediatric patients, between the hospital, residences, diagnostic centers, and other healthcare facilities. The driver must operate the ambulance responsibly while supporting the medical team during emergency and non-emergency patient transfers.

Key Responsibilities1. Ambulance Operations

- Drive the hospital ambulance safely and responsibly.
- Transport patients to and from the hospital, diagnostic centers, residences, and referral hospitals.
- Respond promptly to emergency calls and patient transfer requirements.
- Follow traffic rules, hospital protocols, and emergency vehicle regulations.
- Use emergency lights and sirens appropriately as per applicable rules and hospital policy.
- Select safe and efficient routes to minimize transportation time during emergencies.

2. Patient Transportation

- Assist the medical/nursing team in safely shifting patients into and out of the ambulance.
- Take extra care while transporting newborns, infants, children, pregnant women, and critically ill patients.
- Ensure patients are transported safely without unnecessary delays or sudden movements.
- Assist attendants and hospital staff with basic patient movement when required.
- Maintain professional and compassionate behavior with patients and their attendants.

3. Emergency Support

- Respond immediately to emergency ambulance requirements.
- Coordinate with doctors, nurses, and emergency staff during patient transfers.
- Assist the clinical team during loading and unloading of stretchers and wheelchairs.
- Ensure emergency equipment and patient-support items are not obstructing safe transportation.




- Follow instructions given by the medical team during emergency transfers.

4. Ambulance Maintenance

- Conduct daily checks of the ambulance before starting duty.
- Check fuel level, tyres, brakes, lights, siren, horn, battery, engine oil, coolant, and other essential components.
- Report mechanical problems immediately to the Administration/Transport department.
- Ensure the ambulance is kept clean, hygienic, and ready for immediate use.
- Coordinate for regular servicing, maintenance, and repairs.
- Ensure ambulance equipment and supplies are not damaged or missing and report discrepancies to the concerned department.

5. Documentation

- Maintain ambulance trip sheets/logbooks accurately.
- Record patient transfer details, destination, departure time, arrival time, and kilometres travelled.
- Maintain fuel and vehicle maintenance records as required.
- Submit required ambulance documents and reports to the Administration department.
- Report any accident, vehicle damage, traffic violation, or incident immediately to management.

6. Safety & Compliance

- Possess and maintain a valid commercial/heavy motor vehicle driving licence as applicable to the ambulance and local regulations.
- Follow all applicable road safety and transport regulations.
- Never drive under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or any substance that affects driving ability.
- Avoid rash, negligent, or unsafe driving.
- Maintain patient confidentiality during transportation.
- Follow hospital infection-control and safety procedures.

Qualification

- Minimum 10th / 12th standard qualification preferred.
- Valid driving licence appropriate for the ambulance/vehicle category.




- Valid commercial driving authorization as required by applicable regulations.
- Basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance.
- BLS/First Aid training preferred.

Experience

- 2–5 years of experience as an ambulance driver preferred.
- Experience in a hospital, emergency service, or healthcare organization will be an advantage.
- Experience transporting pediatric, neonatal, obstetric, or critically ill patients is preferred.

- Good knowledge of basic vehicle troubleshooting.
- Strong sense of responsibility and patient safety.

Shift & Availability

- Willingness to work rotational shifts, night shifts, weekends, and public holidays.
- Must be available for emergency patient transfers whenever assigned.
- Should report for duty on time and ensure proper handover of the ambulance at the end of the shift.

Important Responsibilities

Patient safety, safe driving, ambulance readiness, emergency response, cleanliness, documentation, and timely communication with the hospital management are the primary responsibilities of the Ambulance Driver.
