We are hiring for Subject Matter Expert - Medtech (Presales & Discovery)
GreyB is a 500+ person intellectual property research and intelligence firm. Our analytics practice runs
technology scouting, supplier scouting, ecosystem mapping, and voice-of-customer research for R&D;
and open innovation teams - work we've built a deep bench in across packaging and food & beverage,
and are now extending into medtech: medical devices, diagnostics, and digital health.
The role -
We're hiring the person who sits in the room on the first call with a medtech prospect and makes them
stop treating us like a vendor pitch. You'll pair with our sales team on discovery calls with device,
diagnostics, and digital health innovation teams, and your job is to speak the client's language well
enough that within twenty minutes they've stopped explaining their business to us and started asking
what we see that they don't.
This is not a delivery role. You're not running the project once we win it - you're the reason we win it.
Firms that do this well call it presales, solutions consulting, or a domain expert seat - the job is the same
wherever the title lands: technical credibility applied at the front of the sales cycle, not after.
What you'll do -
- Join discovery calls as the technical and industry voice, working alongside account and sales leads
- Translate a prospect's internal language into how our services map to it - a technology scouting ask
might arrive as horizon scanning, innovation intelligence, or voice of physician research,
depending on who's asking.
- Build credibility rapid: ask questions that show you've sat inside an R&D;, open innovation, or
technology assessment function, not just researched one from the outside.
- Help scope test projects and live RFPs coming out of these calls,
working with our analytics leads to
shape something we can deliver well.
- Stay current on how medtech R&D; and open innovation teams split their work - what stays in-house,
what gets scouted through an accelerator or venture arm, and what gets sent to an outside partner
outright, and why that mix keeps shifting.
- Build and maintain a working network of contacts holding titles like Director of Technology Scouting,
Head of Open Innovation, or VP R&D; Strategy at device, diagnostics, and digital health companies.
What we're looking for -
- 10+ years inside medtech - R&D;, open innovation, technology assessment and scouting, corporate
development, or a presales/consulting role serving medtech clients.
- Direct experience on the buyer side of build-vs-buy-vs-partner decisions - knowing firsthand why a
team scouts internally, runs something through a venture or accelerator program, or hands it to an
outside partner.
- Comfortable in front of clients - this is a client-facing role, not a research desk role.
- Working knowledge of how device, diagnostics, and digital health companies structure and fund
innovation, including where corporate venture, accelerators, and strategic partnerships fit alongside
traditional outsourcing.
Nice to have -
- Existing relationships with Heads of Open Innovation, VPs of R&D; Strategy, or similar roles at
medtech companies.
- Prior experience in IP, patent, or competitive intelligence services specifically.
- Familiarity with adjacent medtech consulting language - regulatory and clinical strategy, market
access, health economics, real-world evidence - even if that's not the seat you're filling here.
- A track record of turning a first conversation into a signed engagement.
