The Infection Control Nurse (ICN) is responsible for implementing and monitoring the Hospital Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Program under the guidance of the Infection Control Officer (ICO). The ICN conducts infection surveillance, audits, staff education, compliance monitoring, outbreak investigations, and quality improvement activities to prevent Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs) and ensure compliance with NABH 6th Edition Standards, Biomedical Waste Management Rules, and applicable statutory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Infection Surveillance
Conduct surveillance for Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs) including CAUTI, CLABSI, VAP, SSI, and other hospital-acquired infections.
Collect, compile, and analyze infection surveillance data.
Maintain infection surveillance registers and databases.
Report infection trends to the Infection Control Officer.
Infection Prevention & Control
Monitor compliance with Standard and Transmission-Based Precautions.
Ensure proper hand hygiene practices.
Monitor isolation precautions.
Verify appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Promote secure injection and sharps practices.
Infection Control Audits
Conduct regular audits on:
Hand Hygiene Compliance
PPE Compliance
Biomedical Waste Segregation
Environmental Cleaning & Disinfection
Sterilization & CSSD Practices
Isolation Practices
Linen Management
Needle Stick Injury Prevention
Biomedical Waste Management
Monitor segregation, collection, transportation, and disposal of biomedical waste.
Conduct BMW compliance audits.
Educate staff on Biomedical Waste Management Rules.
Report non-compliance to the ICO.
Staff Training & Education
Conduct and coordinate training on:
Hand Hygiene
Infection Prevention Practices
PPE Usage
Biomedical Waste Management
Needle Stick Injury Prevention
Protected Injection Practices
Spill Management
Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP)
