The Infection Control Officer (ICO) is responsible for planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating the Hospital Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Program. The ICO provides leadership in preventing and controlling Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs), ensuring compliance with NABH 6th Edition standards, National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) guidelines, Biomedical Waste Management Rules, and other applicable statutory requirements. The ICO leads infection surveillance, antimicrobial stewardship, outbreak investigation, staff education, and quality improvement initiatives to promote patient and staff safety.
Key Responsibilities
Infection Prevention & Control Program
Develop, implement, and periodically review the Hospital Infection Prevention & Control (IPC) Program.
Ensure compliance with NABH Infection Control standards.
Establish infection prevention policies, SOPs, and protocols.
Monitor implementation across all hospital departments.
Surveillance
Establish surveillance systems for Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs).
Monitor and analyze infection trends.
Identify infection outbreaks and recommend preventive measures.
Prepare surveillance reports and infection statistics.
Infection Control Committee
Serve as Member Secretary/Chairperson (as assigned) of the Infection Control Committee.
Conduct regular committee meetings.
Prepare meeting agendas and minutes.
Monitor implementation of committee recommendations.
Antibiotic Stewardship
Lead or support the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (AMSP).
Monitor rational antibiotic use.
Review antimicrobial resistance patterns.
Coordinate with clinicians and microbiology.
Outbreak Investigation
Investigate suspected outbreaks promptly.
Conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
Recommend corrective and preventive actions.
Monitor implementation and effectiveness.

Conduct infection control rounds.
