The Role
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Outpatients infectious diseases service as a Health Care Support Worker.
The Brownlee
Outpatient service provides scheduled care to those patients referred to the service from GPs, inpatient care environments and other departments within GGC. There is provision of care for general infectious diseases patients and also those living with a long term disease, for example HIV and/or another blood borne virus. Travel services are carried out within the department and encompass both pre and post travel, the registered nurses and Travel specialists and carry out vaccinations and give post vaccination advice when necessary to the patient.
An OPD HCSW is someone who has the capability to learn and take forward knowledge and experience. Whilst in post the staff member will be able to take advantage of the knowledge that the large OPD multidisciplinary team can offer.
Applicants must have previous experience and be competent in venepuncture and cannulation. Evidence of training and competency in blood collection and cannulation is required.
As a member of the Outpatients team they are responsible for ensuring a high standard of care to patients with complex, long term and short term infection treatment supported by the registered nurses within the team.
The HCSW carries supported responsibility for the assessment of care needs including diagnostic observations such as BP, Pulse, weight, waist measurements and height, the development, implementation and evaluation of care and the setting of standards. The HCSW will assist in pre clinic preparation for OPD nurse led clinics.
Part of the HCSW role is to ensure that ordering of stock and management of the same is undertaken regularly and also to maintain the suitability of the department for service provision. Adhering to cleaning schedules and be aware of infection control policy and protocols is essential.
All Statutory / Mandatory LearnPro training modules must be compliant and include educational modules relevant to this specialty.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:
- Location based in Gartnavel General Hospital, Brownlee Outpatients Department
- Permanent Contract
- Full-time position (36 hours per week)
- Shift pattern for this post are 09:00 - 17:30, Monday to Friday, Shifts consist of four 8 hour shifts and a shorter day to make the working week up to 36 hours, this short day is not a set day but taken when service provision allows.
Key Responsibilities
- You are able to competently perform the necessary technical/physical aspects of care for this defined patient group to carry out venepuncture and phlebotomy skills.
- You must have the ability to work independently when required and possess a high level of interpersonal and confident communication skills to support this specific client group, whilst upholding confidentiality at all times.
- You will work within the team to assess individual patients when they attend scheduled and unscheduled appointments.
- You will participate in service development in conjunction with the Team lead along with other team members to assist in maintaining service objectives to meet the changing demands of delivering specialised care to patients with long term disease, those with general Infectious Diseases infection and the provision of both pre and post travel services.
- You will be expected to contribute professionally within the large multidisciplinary groups which may cross traditional or service boundaries and possess a competent level of ITC skills including e- forms, Trakcare and portal.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
- Training is provided to enable the Senior HCSW to comply with the Mandatory Induction Standards for Healthcare Support Workers in Scotland 2009; and with the Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers, both as amended from time to time.
- SVQ 3 qualification or equivalent knowledge gained in a relevant area through experience, on the job training and short courses.
- Understands and complies with HCSW mandatory induction standards and code of conduct.
- Completion and maintenance of statutory & mandatory learning activities.
- Awareness, understanding and compliance of policies and practices e.g.

Policy, Prevention and control of infection and Health and Safety. This post holder is therefore able to work within the scope of their practice under direct and indirect supervision by the registered nurse (training will be provided)
- Can demonstrate knowledge of equipment used within the department to support the registered nurse and ensure that they are compatible and in good working order. Will escalate any concerns to a registered nurse.
- Completion of in house training programme as required. Continues to develop knowledge and practice through a combination of instruction, on the job learning, attending teaching sessions and study days, where appropriate.
- Can demonstrate a range of core skills to competently undertake patient care and other tasks and activities.
- Effective written and verbal communication, literacy, numeracy and IT skills.
- A demonstration of caring and compassionate attributes.
- Ability to work as part of the multidisciplinary team
