Role Overview
Mecwin is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design & Development Engineer specialising in the design and development of electric motors. In this role you will own the mechanical architecture of a wide range of motor types — from concept through validation and production — delivering efficient, reliable, and manufacturable designs. Our motors serve diverse industries including electric mobility and automotive, industrial automation, robotics, drones, pumps and HVAC, consumer appliances, medical devices, and high-reliability applications.
This is a hands-on, ownership-driven position for an engineer with robust fundamentals in electromechanical design, structural and thermal analysis, and design for manufacturing.
Motor Types You'll Work On The role spans the full spectrum of electric machines, and experience with any of the following is valuable:
- BLDC (Brushless DC) and PMSM (Permanent Magnet Synchronous) motors
- Brushed DC and Coreless / Slotless motors
- AC Induction (IM) and Synchronous motors
- SRM (Switched Reluctance) motors
- Stepper and Servo motors
- Axial-flux, in-wheel / hub, and other specialised motor topologies
Key Responsibilities
- Motor Mechanical Design: Lead the mechanical design of electric motors across topologies — including rotor and stator assemblies, shafts, laminations stack-up, magnets/retention, housings, end-bells, bearing systems, and mounting interfaces — using SolidWorks and associated CAD tools.
- Electromechanical Integration: Translate electromagnetic and application requirements into robust mechanical architectures, working with electromagnetic and electrical designers to optimise packaging, mass, thermal paths, and cost.
- Analysis & Validation: Perform structural, thermal, vibration, NVH, and rotordynamic analysis (FEA)
to validate performance across the operating envelope. Conduct tolerance stack-up analysis and define fits, clearances, and rotor balancing requirements.
- Development & Prototyping: Drive prototype builds, bearing and cooling selection, magnet retention strategies, and design-for-reliability trade studies. Lead and support design reviews (concept, preliminary, and detailed).
- Testing & Failure Analysis: Oversee prototyping and validation testing, conduct root-cause and failure analysis, and ensure designs meet performance, durability, and applicable regulatory/quality requirements.
- Design for Manufacturing & Documentation: Generate technical specifications, detailed drawings, and BOMs using sound GD&T; practice. Optimise designs for manufacturability, assembly, and cost, and maintain proper design records.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Partner with manufacturing, quality, procurement, and suppliers to move designs smoothly from concept to volume production, resolving design and process issues proactively.
- Continuous Improvement & Mentorship: Identify opportunities to improve motor efficiency, power density, reliability, and cost. Stay current on emerging motor technologies and mentor junior engineers where appropriate.
Required Qualifications & Competencies
- Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics,
or a closely related discipline.
- Experience: 5–9 years of hands-on mechanical design experience, with a strong focus on the design and development of electric motors and rotating electromechanical assemblies.
- Technical Expertise: Exceptional grasp of mechanics, strength of materials, machine design, and thermal management. Proven ability to design motor mechanical architectures — rotors, stators, bearings, shafts, and housings.
- CAD & Analysis: Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks (or equivalent) and practical experience with structural/thermal FEA, tolerance stack-up, and rotordynamics.
- Manufacturing Knowledge: Solid understanding of manufacturing and assembly processes for precision electromechanical components (machining, casting, winding, lamination stacking, over-moulding, etc.).
- Standards & GD&T;: Strong command of GD&T; (ASME Y14.5 / ISO GPS) and familiarity with relevant quality systems (ISO 9001 / IATF 16949 / AS9100 as applicable to the industry).
- Soft Skills: Excellent communication, collaboration, and project-management skills, with the ability to own deliverables and work effectively across disciplines.
Desirable / Nice to Have
- Exposure to electromagnetic design tools (e.g., Motor-CAD, Ansys Maxwell) for cross-functional collaboration.
- Experience across multiple end-markets (EV/automotive, industrial, robotics, appliances, aerospace, medical, etc.).
- Familiarity with actuators, gearboxes, or solenoids alongside core motor design.
- Experience taking motor designs from prototype through mass production.
