Objective To collect samples, study them, perform tests and give out timely reports in accordance to the protocols and maintain hygiene in the laboratory.
Key Responsibilities

Initial Sampling
- Handling and testing of various samples(blood/urine/stool/sputum etc)
- Assuring personal hygiene by wearing caps, masks, gloves at all times
- Registering each sample after receiving it in the Sample Receiving File
- Cross verification of samples received with that of file data
- In case of any missing sample,
taking follow up from that particular floor or department from the file record
- Coordinating with MO for sample received confirmation
- Bifurcating the samples on the basis of sample type (plain/citrate/heparin) and centrifuging them
- After centrifuging, checking of samples with files for carrying out the specific test(biochemical, immunology etc)
- Bifurcating the samples on the basis of tests:
i) biochemical ii) immunology iii) For both, perform immunology first and then biochemical

Pathology Related
- In case of clotted, defective or hymolyzed blood, asking for a repeat sample of the respective patient
- Informing the biomedical/engineering department in case of machine breakdown
- Ensuring infection control practices at all times
- Attending all vaccination programs for technicians as per schedules from time to time
- Prioritizing the testing on the basis of the software indicator and giving highest priority to emergency samples
- Conducting the Troponin-I test within 20 minutes with generation of report
- Imparting training to new technicians and guide on the usage of machinery

Haematology
- Testing of the blood components as prescribed
- Performing the EDTA test for whole blood and running in the machine directly
- Making notes about patients and their follow ups in the software
- Confirming with the floor about admission in case of in-house patient
- Preparation of slides for CBC morphology in the microscopy test

Clinical
- Testing samples of urine, stool and semen analysis
- Checking of what type of test is to be conducted on the sample
- If the sample is found abnormal after running in machine, centrifuge the sample and then perform microscopy on it

Histopathology
- Testing of biopsy samples
- Receiving the biopsy sample from OT attendant
- Checking of sample whether it is contained in formal in presence of the attendant
- If the sample is without the solution, send the biopsy sample back to the floor for addition and then receiving it
- Before outsourcing the sample for testing to other unit, taking consent of receival from the person collecting without fail
- Maintaining the Biopsy Outsourcing Register
- Receiving three copies of reports from the outsourced unit with blocks and slides of each sample
- Handing over reports to the patients or their relatives in person and taking down all information from the receiver

Blood Chemistry/ Serology
- Testing of HIV, HBSAG, HCV, VDRL etc samples
- For positive(reactive) report, checking of sample should be done thrice using different methods and panels by keeping the doctor and pathologist in loop
- Informing about reactive report release to the patient doctor, floor manager, OT manager in case of in-door patient

Outsourcing
- Maintenance of Sample Outsourcing Register
- Sending out sample for testing with all details on it
- Receiving confirmation mail from the outsourced authority about the sample receival
- Constant follow up with the outsource party and attaching the report in the mail for record
