What the Role Actually Requires
Essential non-negotiable:
- IoT application layer depth — the candidate must understand how IoT devices communicate to application servers at the protocol level. MQTT is the primary protocol.
- IoT device types — direct experience with occupancy sensors, air quality monitors, smart lighting, CCTV, or building management systems. The candidate must have worked with these devices at the configuration and application layer, not just managed the network infrastructure around them.
- IoT endpoint management — firmware updates, certificate lifecycle management,
device configuration, and lifecycle from onboarding through decommission across a fleet of devices.
- OT/IT convergence — experience working where operational technology meets enterprise IT infrastructure. Industrial protocols (Modbus, OPC-UA, BACnet) are a significant advantage.
- Building automation or smart building backgrounds are the strongest source of the right candidates.
- Regulated environment awareness — structured change control, security architecture review processes, and multi-team approval workflows. Financial services, pharmaceutical GMP, government, or similarly regulated environments all qualify.
