Recently, I shared a sample budget for a family of four earning $408,000 a year on Twitter, the amount deemed necessary to feel comfortable in San Francisco. The tweet garnered over three million views and more than a thousand responses.

However, the views aren’t the main story. What truly matters is what I learned from the replies. And folks, I have tremendous news.

America is thriving We are wealthier, happier, and healthier than the media often portrays. Forget the narrative of a retirement crisis where the average American supposedly can’t come up with $400 for an emergency. Forget the health crisis too.

Healthy, Wealthy, And Happy Americans Are We

With over three million views and a thousand-plus responses,



I gathered insights that no well-funded university research lab could replicate so quickly.

Based on these responses, I can confidently say that nobody in America is struggling with credit card debt. Everyone maxes out their 401(k). Every household maintains a detailed budget, updated weekly, and discussed calmly with a spouse who agrees on everything. And we all have a shot at modeling for next year’s swimsuit calendar.

Food costs are particularly encouraging. Many families are reportedly feeding four people on $1,600 a month or less. That breaks down to about $13 per person per day, including fresh produce and adequate protein. With such nationwide grocery discipline, I can only assume America’s obesity statistics are a clerical error.
