Job Description
PhD Position in Experimental Astroparticle Physics
Nuclear Fragmentation Measurements for Precision Cosmic-Ray Astrophysics
Up-to-date space-borne experiments measure Galactic cosmic-ray fluxes with percent-level precision, yet their interpretation, including searches for dark matter and the origin of cosmic antimatter, is limited by nuclear fragmentation cross sections known only to 20% or worse. The successful candidate will help close this gap by measuring how cosmic-ray nuclei fragment into secondary particles, using new data from the NA61/SHINE experiment at CERN.
The position focuses on the analysis of NA61/SHINE data taken with cosmic-ray nuclei from Li to Si at beam energies of 12.5 and 150 GeV/nucleon. The work includes detector calibration, particle identification with the time-of-flight and time-projection-chamber systems of the NA61/SHINE spectrometer, and the extraction of fragmentation cross sections. Depending on interest, the research may also involve the development of improved cross-section parameterizations and their implementation in cosmic-ray propagation calculations.
The position is based at the Institute for Astroparticle Physics of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. The PhD student will receive graduate training within the Karlsruhe School of Elementary Particle and Astroparticle Physics (KSETA) and will be embedded in an active astroparticle-physics environment, including groups working on the Pierre Auger Observatory and IceCube. Research visits to CERN and close collaboration within the NA61/SHINE c
