Job Description
We are looking for a Test Engineer to execute and validate ACL interoperability test cases across NFS and SMB environments. The role requires someone who can understand differences between NFS and SMB access-control models, execute commands accurately, and record clear and complete observations.
Key Responsibilities
Execute ACL interoperability test cases for NFS and SMB.
Understand test-case instructions, prerequisites, expected results, and execution steps.
Run commands on required client or server environments.
Validate file and directory access for different users, groups, permissions, and ACL entries.
Compare expected and actual behavior across NFS and SMB access paths.
Test create, read, write, modify, rename, delete, list, and execute operations.
Verify ACL inheritance, permission propagation, access-denied behavior, and effective user access.
Validate how ACLs are displayed, translated, preserved, modified, or enforced across protocols.
Capture command output, error messages, access results, timestamps, and environment details.
Record observations clearly and systematically for each test case.
Identify whether test cases are passed, failed, blocked, or require further investigation.
Report deviations between expected and actual results with supporting evidence.
Re-run failed or inconsistent cases to determine reproducibility.
Escalate issues with reproduction steps, logs, command output, and observations.
Maintain test execution records and update results as environments or implementations change.
Technical Skills
Protocols and Access Control
NFS and SMB file protocols.
NFS ACLs and SMB/Windows-style ACLs.
File and directory permissions, ownership, users, groups, and effective access.
ACL inheritance, permission propagation, deny and allow rules, and access evaluation.
Protocol-specific differences in ACL representation, mapping, enforcement, and reporting.
Operating Systems and Environments
Linux or Unix-like client and server environments.
Windows, macOS, or other supported client environments.
Basic understanding of mounting shares, connecting to exports, switching users, and validating access.
Command-line execution and shell usage.
Test Execution and Evidence Collection
Protocol and file-system commands required by test cases.
Commands for viewing and modifying file permissions and ACLs.
Access-validation commands for listing, reading, writing, creating, modifying, and deleting files.
Capture of terminal output, logs, screenshots, and test-result evidence.
Structured test-case management and defect-tracking systems.
Must-Have Expertise
Experience executing software, system,
storage, file-system, or protocol test cases.
Basic to intermediate Linux or Unix command-line experience.
Ability to follow multi-step technical instructions accurately.
Understanding of users, groups, ownership, permissions, and access control.
Ability to execute commands and interpret basic command output and error messages.
Familiarity with NFS, SMB, file sharing, or network file systems.
Robust attention to detail when comparing expected and actual results.
Ability to document observations clearly, including commands, outputs, and outcomes.
Ability to reproduce failures and provide complete evidence to engineering teams.
Understanding of test-case statuses such as pass, fail, blocked, not reproducible, and needs investigation.
Preferred Expertise
Hands-on experience with NFS and SMB testing.
Understanding of NFS ACLs and SMB/Windows ACLs.
Experience with Linux ACL commands such as chmod, chown, getfacl, and setfacl.
Experience with SMB share access, Windows permissions, or Windows ACL administration.
Experience validating access using multiple users and groups.
Familiarity with ACL inheritance, nested directories, permission precedence, and effective permissions.
Experience testing storage systems, NAS platforms, file services, or distributed systems.
Familiarity with Jira, TestRail, spreadsheets, or other test-management tools.
Experience creating defect reports with reproduction steps, logs, command output, and expected-versus-actual results.
Basic scripting experience in Shell, Python, or similar languages.
