The OT Scrub Nurse is responsible for maintaining strict aseptic techniques, preparing surgical instruments and supplies, assisting surgeons during procedures, and ensuring patient safety throughout the surgery.
1. Key ResponsibilitiesA. Pre-Operative Responsibilities
- Prepare the Operation Theatre before every procedure.
- Check availability and sterility of surgical instruments, sets, gowns, gloves and consumables.
- Arrange instruments and surgical supplies according to the procedure.
- Verify sterilization indicators and ensure sterile items are within validity.
- Participate in surgical safety checklist and pre-operative preparation.
- Ensure OT equipment and instruments are functional and ready for use.
- Maintain proper inventory of surgical instruments and consumables.
B. Intra-Operative Responsibilities
- Scrub, gown and glove according to standard aseptic procedures.
- Set up and maintain the sterile surgical field.
- Pass instruments, sutures and other required items to the surgeon and assistants efficiently.
- Anticipate the surgeon's requirements during the procedure.
- Maintain strict aseptic technique throughout surgery.
- Perform instrument, sponge, needle and swab counts along with the circulating nurse.
- Immediately report any contamination, missing instrument or discrepancy in counts.
- Handle surgical specimens appropriately and ensure proper identification and transfer.
- Assist with surgical equipment and special instruments as required.
C. Post-Operative Responsibilities
- Complete final instrument, sponge and needle counts.
- Ensure all instruments are collected, cleaned and sent for decontamination/sterilization.
- Dispose of biomedical waste according to hospital policy.
- Assist in cleaning and preparing OT for the next procedure.
- Ensure used instruments and surgical sets are properly accounted for.
- Report damaged, missing or malfunctioning instruments to the OT In-Charge.
1. Infection Control Responsibilities
- Strictly follow hospital infection-control protocols.
- Maintain aseptic and sterile techniques at all times.
- Follow proper hand hygiene and PPE protocols.
- Ensure proper handling of sterile and contaminated materials.
- Follow biomedical waste management guidelines.
- Participate in infection-control audits and training programs.
- Report any infection-control breach immediately to the concerned authority.
1. Documentation & Records
- Maintain OT records and surgical procedure-related documentation.
- Record instrument and consumable usage where applicable.
- Maintain count sheets and sterilization-related records.
- Ensure specimen documentation is accurate.
- Report incidents, near misses and equipment/instrument issues.
1. Inventory & Equipment Management
- Check surgical instruments and OT consumables regularly.
- Maintain minimum stock levels for frequently used items.
- Inform the OT In-Charge about shortages or expired items.
- Ensure proper care and handling of surgical instruments.
- Avoid unnecessary wastage of consumables.
- Coordinate with CSSD/Stores for instrument sets and consumables.
1. Patient Safety Responsibilities
- Maintain patient confidentiality and dignity.
- Follow all surgical safety protocols.
- Ensure correct procedure and site verification as part of the surgical safety checklist.
- Immediately communicate any discrepancy or safety concern.
- Assist the OT team in maintaining a safe surgical environment.
1. Coordination
The OT Scrub Nurse shall coordinate with:
- Surgeons and Surgical Assistants
- Anaesthesia Team
- OT In-Charge
- Circulating Nurses
- CSSD
- Nursing Department
- Central Stores/Pharmacy
- Infection Control Department
- Biomedical/Equipment Maintenance Team
1. Qualifications
- GNM / B.Sc. Nursing from a recognized institution.
- Valid nursing registration.
- Previous OT experience preferred.
- Knowledge of surgical procedures, instruments and aseptic techniques.
- Basic knowledge of infection control and biomedical waste management.

- Compliance with hospital and NABH standards.
1. Working Conditions
- Willingness to work in rotational shifts.
- Should be available for emergency surgeries as per duty roster.
- Must strictly follow OT dress code and PPE requirements.
- Should maintain professional conduct and confidentiality at all times.
Pay: ₹25,000.00 - ₹30,000.00 per month
