Job Title: Design & Production Engineer - Marine Robotics

Company: Vikra Ocean Tech

Location: Chennai (Perumbakkam / Vengavasal), Tamil Nadu

Job Type: Full-Time, Permanent

Experience: Minimum 1 Year

About Us

Vikra Ocean Tech Private Limited is a specialist subsea inspection and underwater robotics company based in Chennai. We deliver ROV-based inspection, unmanned surface vehicle (USV) surveys, and applied marine technology services to clients across the oil & gas, ports & maritime, and offshore renewables sectors. Our team combines field engineering with contemporary expertise in sensor integration, computer vision, and machine learning to deliver data-driven subsea services.

The Role

We are looking for a driven Design & Production Engineer with at least one year of industry experience to bridge the gap between concept and reality. In this role, you will be responsible for designing mechanical systems for our underwater and surface robotics platforms, as well as overseeing their transition into physical production.

You will work closely with our engineering and field teams to design robust, waterproof, and manufacturable components, manage vendors, and ensure quality control during the assembly phase.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Engineering:

- Develop 3D CAD models and detailed 2D manufacturing drawings for ROV/USV components, including chassis, waterproof enclosures, payload brackets, and thruster mounts.
- Apply Design for Manufacturability (DFM) principles to ensure parts can be machined, 3D printed, or fabricated efficiently and cost-effectively.
- Design sealing mechanisms (O-ring grooves, gaskets, potting enclosures) for subsea operations.
- Maintain and update engineering documentation, version control, and digital models (e.g., STEP files).

Production & Prototyping:

- Create and manage comprehensive Bills of Materials (BOM) for robotic assemblies.

- Source mechanical components (fasteners, bearings, raw materials) and collaborate with local manufacturing vendors (CNC machining, laser cutting, sheet metal, 3D printing) to get parts fabricated.
- Conduct incoming quality inspections on fabricated parts to ensure they meet specified tolerances and GD&T; requirements.
- Work hands-on with the technician team to assemble prototypes, test physical fits, and resolve assembly floor issues.

Requirements & Qualifications

- Education: B.E. / B.Tech in Aeronautical, Mechanical, or Marine Engineering.
- Experience: 1 to 2 years of hands-on experience in mechanical design, product development, or production engineering.
- Software Proficiency: Robust skills in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or similar).
- Technical Knowledge:
- Solid understanding of common manufacturing processes (milling, turning, fabrication, 3D printing).
- Knowledge of engineering materials, particularly marine-grade metals (e.g., Aluminum 6061/7075, Stainless Steel 316) and engineering plastics (Delrin, Polycarbonate).
- Understanding of standard mechanical components (fasteners, linear motion guides, motors).
- Problem-Solving: Ability to rapidly iterate on designs based on prototype feedback and field-trial failures.

What Gives You an Edge (Preferred Skills)

- Prior experience designing waterproof enclosures or working with IP67/IP68+ rated products.
- Experience with buoyancy calculations and subsea weight distribution.
- Familiarity with rapid prototyping techniques, including custom molding or vacuum casting.

Why Join Us? You won't be stuck designing brackets in a cubicle all day. You will see your designs manufactured, assembled, and deployed in real-world marine environments. This is a high-impact role where your engineering decisions directly affect the performance and survivability of our robots in the field.

Work Location: In person
