About the Role
We're hiring a Data Engineer to build data pipelines for a workplace analytics initiative for a global banking client. The role involves pulling data from physical access systems and building/space systems, cleaning and transforming it, and producing safe, aggregated datasets — without exposing sensitive raw data. This runs on the client's on-prem servers today, with a planned future move to Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
This is a production-facing role — you'll be expected to follow proper escalation processes and lead root cause analysis when issues arise.
What You'll Do
- Build and maintain ETL/ELT pipelines pulling from multiple source systems
- Design clean, well-structured data models — this is judged heavily, since the design will carry forward into a future cloud migration
- Work across both logical and physical data modeling — from conceptual entity design through to actual database implementation
- Write and tune SQL queries for large data volumes
- Automate pipeline runs
- Ensure data quality, validation, and reconciliation
- Maintain data lineage — track and document how data moves and transforms across the pipeline, from raw source to final output
- Build with a "cloud-ready" mindset — code and design should lift-and-shift cleanly to GCP later
- Work with synthetic/test data (production data won't be available in lower environments)
- Follow structured SDLC practices across requirements, design, development, testing, and deployment
- Handle production issues through proper escalation procedures and structured Root Cause Analysis (RCA)
- Work closely with the internal team to stay up to date on product features, changes, and issues
Must-Have Skills (Primary)
- Strong SQL — including query tuning and performance optimization
- Python (or similar scripting language) for pipeline logic
- ETL/ELT development — hands-on, not just conceptual
- Data modeling — structuring data cleanly and thoughtfully, both logically and physically; this is a top priority for this role
- Logical Data Models (LDM) and Physical Data Models (PDM) — able to design conceptual data structures and translate them into real database implementations
- Data quality and data lineage — ensuring accuracy and being able to trace how data moves and transforms across the pipeline
- SDLC understanding — comfortable working within a structured software delivery process
- Escalation handling and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) — experience with production support processes, knowing when and how to escalate issues, and investigating problems methodically
- Strong problem-solving ability
- Comfortable working independently — self-starter, analytical thinker, doesn't need constant hand-holding
Positive to Have (Secondary — not blocking)
- Power BI or Tableau — basic familiarity is enough
- CI/CD exposure (e.g., Jenkins) — nice to have, not required
- Any cloud experience, ideally GCP
What We're Looking For Minimum experience needed to work confidently and independently in ETL and data modeling specifically — candidates don't need to check every box (aim for roughly 75% skill match), since our internal team will support and fill any smaller gaps.
