1. Job Purpose
The Anaesthesia & OT Technician is responsible for assisting the Anaesthesiologist and surgical team in preparing, operating, maintaining, and safely handling anaesthesia equipment, surgical equipment, instruments, and OT supplies. The technician ensures that the OT is fully prepared and functional before, during, and after surgical procedures.
1. Key ResponsibilitiesA. Pre-Operative Responsibilities
- Prepare the Operation Theatre before every scheduled procedure.
- Check the availability and functioning of anaesthesia machines, ventilators, monitors, suction apparatus and other equipment.
- Prepare anaesthesia trolley and required drugs, syringes, airway devices and consumables as instructed by the Anaesthesiologist.
- Check oxygen, nitrous oxide and other medical gas supplies.
- Check breathing circuits, laryngoscopes, endotracheal tubes, masks, airways and other airway equipment.
- Ensure emergency equipment and crash cart are available and functional.
- Check suction equipment and ensure it is ready for use.
- Assist in preparing surgical tables, OT equipment and patient positioning aids.
- Ensure availability of required surgical instruments and consumables.
- Follow OT checklist and hospital safety protocols.
B. Anaesthesia Assistance
- Assist the Anaesthesiologist during induction, maintenance and recovery of anaesthesia.
- Prepare and arrange anaesthesia equipment as per the procedure.
- Assist with airway management equipment under the direction of the Anaesthesiologist.
- Assist in connecting and checking patient monitoring equipment.
- Ensure required anaesthesia consumables are readily available.
- Assist during emergency airway management and resuscitation procedures as directed.
- Maintain proper handling and storage of anaesthesia equipment.
- Immediately report equipment malfunction or shortage to the concerned authority.
- Never administer anaesthesia drugs independently unless specifically authorized under hospital policy and applicable qualified scope.
C. Intra-Operative Responsibilities
- Remain available in the OT throughout the assigned procedure.
- Assist the surgical and anaesthesia teams as required.
- Ensure required equipment is available and functioning.
- Assist in patient positioning and application of safety measures.
- Maintain proper OT discipline and aseptic practices.
- Assist in connecting electrosurgical units, suction and other OT equipment.
- Support the team during emergency procedures.
- Maintain communication with the OT In-Charge regarding equipment and consumable requirements.
D. Post-Operative Responsibilities
- Assist the Anaesthesiologist during patient transfer to recovery area.
- Ensure anaesthesia equipment is cleaned and appropriately stored after use.
- Send reusable instruments and equipment for cleaning/decontamination as per protocol.
- Replace used consumables and prepare the OT for the next procedure.
- Check oxygen, suction and other equipment after every procedure.
- Report damaged or malfunctioning equipment immediately.
- Ensure proper disposal of biomedical waste.
1. OT Equipment & Maintenance
The technician shall regularly check:
- Anaesthesia machine
- Ventilator
- Multiparameter monitor
- Pulse oximeter
- ECG equipment
- NIBP equipment
- Capnography, where available
- Suction apparatus
- Laryngoscope
- Airway devices
- Defibrillator
- Electrocautery/diathermy
- Operating tables
- OT lights
- Surgical equipment
- Oxygen and medical gas connections
Any equipment malfunction must be immediately reported to the OT In-Charge/Biomedical Department.
1. Infection Control Responsibilities
- Strictly follow hospital infection-control policies.
- Follow proper hand hygiene and PPE requirements.
- Maintain aseptic technique while handling equipment and supplies.
- Ensure reusable equipment is appropriately cleaned and disinfected.
- Follow CSSD protocols for sterilizable equipment.
- Follow biomedical waste management procedures.
- Prevent cross-contamination between patients and procedures.
- Participate in infection-control audits and training.
1. Emergency Responsibilities
- Be prepared to assist during medical and surgical emergencies.
- Ensure emergency airway equipment is immediately available.
- Assist the Anaesthesiologist during resuscitation and emergency procedures.
- Ensure crash cart and emergency equipment are checked regularly.
- Assist during Code Blue/emergency response as per hospital protocol.
- Report emergency equipment shortages immediately.
1. Inventory & Consumable Management
- Maintain adequate stock of anaesthesia and OT consumables.
- Check expiry dates of consumables and equipment-related items.
- Maintain proper stock rotation using FEFO – First Expiry, First Out.
- Inform the OT In-Charge regarding shortages.
- Avoid unnecessary wastage of consumables.
- Maintain records of equipment and consumable usage where required.
- Coordinate with Stores/Pharmacy/CSSD for required supplies.
1. Documentation
Maintain or assist with:
- OT equipment checklist
- Anaesthesia equipment checklist
- Emergency equipment checklist
- Equipment maintenance records
- OT procedure records
- Consumable usage records
- Sterilization-related records
- Incident/accident reports
- Equipment breakdown reports
1. Coordination
The Anaesthesia & OT Technician shall coordinate with:
- Anaesthesiologists
- Surgeons
- OT In-Charge
- Scrub Nurses
- Circulating Nurses
- Nursing HOD
- CSSD Department
- Pharmacy
- Central Stores
- Biomedical Engineering Department
- Infection Control Department
- Recovery Room/PACU Team
1. Qualifications
- Diploma / B.Sc. in Operation Theatre Technology, Anaesthesia Technology or equivalent recognized qualification.
- Relevant registration/certification wherever applicable.
- Previous experience in a hospital OT preferred.
- Experience in handling anaesthesia machines and OT equipment preferred.

Pay: ₹25,000.00 - ₹32,000.00 per month
