A Senior Lab Chemist in a steel rolling mill manages the quality control of raw materials, in-process metals, and finished TMT bars or structural steel. They conduct chemical analyses, operate spectroscopy instruments, ensure compliance with manufacturing standards, and oversee junior lab technicians. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Key Responsibilities

- Chemical Analysis: Perform qualitative and quantitative analysis of raw materials (e.g., billets, sponge iron), alloys, and molten metals to verify the exact carbon, sulfur, manganese, and phosphorus compositions.

- Testing & Quality Control: Conduct physical and chemical testing on finished TMT bars (e.g., tensile strength, elongation, and yield strength tests) to ensure they meet BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) or international requirements.

- Equipment Operation: Calibrate and operate analytical instruments such as XRF Spectrometers, Optical Emission Spectrometers (OES), and combustion analyzers.

- Process Troubleshooting:



Quickly identify deviations in steel chemistry during rolling and provide corrective recommendations to the production and quality assurance (QA) teams.

- Team Leadership: Supervise, train, and mentor junior chemists and laboratory staff across different shifts.

- Documentation & Safety: Maintain strict laboratory records, manage chemical inventory, and ensure adherence to safety, environmental, and GLP/ISO standards. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8]

Typical Requirements

- Education: B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Chemistry or Analytical Chemistry.

- Experience: 2-3 years of hands-on experience in quality control within an integrated steel plant, induction furnace, or rolling mill.
