A Chemist (SID/Raw Material) in a steel manufacturing plant (typically Sponge Iron/DRI) ensures quality standards by analyzing raw materials like iron ore, coal, coke, and limestone, as well as finished products like sponge iron, pig iron, and slag. They use wet chemistry and instrumentation to maintain quality control. [1, 2, 3] Key Responsibilities

- Chemical Analysis: Perform qualitative/quantitative analysis of raw materials (Iron Ore, Coal, Coke, Dolomite, Manganese Ore) and molten metals to meet specifications.
- Lab Operations: Prepare reagents, standardize solutions, and calibrate laboratory instruments (e.g., XRF spectrometers, Carbon & Sulfur analyzers, Proximate Analyzers).
- Quality Control: Analyze parameters like Fe (total/metallic), Silica, Alumina, Carbon, and Sulfur in sponge iron and slag.
- Physical Testing: Conduct sieve analysis,



shatter tests, and tumble tests.
- Reporting: Document and report analytical data to production and quality management teams.

Job Requirements

- Education: B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Chemistry.
- Experience: 2–5+ years in a laboratory setting, specifically within the steel, metal, or iron (SID) industry.
