A Gastroenterology OT/Endoscopy Technician provides specialized technical support during diagnostic, therapeutic, and emergency GI procedures. They handle delicate endoscopic equipment, manage the endoscopy suite, and assist gastroenterologists with advanced luminal and biliary interventions.
Key Responsibilities
1. Specialized Procedure Setup & Assistance
- Scope preparation: Set up, test, and calibrate video endoscopes, colonoscopes, duodenoscopes, and echoendoscopes.
- Intra-operative support: Pass specialized GI accessories like biopsy forceps, injection needles, snares, balloons, and stents during live procedures.
- Advanced GI assistance: Assist in complex procedures including ERCP, EUS, ESD/EMR, and foreign body removals.
- Patient positioning: Position patients safely for left-lateral or prone positions and assist with conscious sedation monitoring.
2. Scope Reprocessing & Infection Control
- High-level disinfection (HLD): Clean, leak-test, manual-brush, and chemically disinfect delicate adaptable endoscopes according to strict global guidelines (e.g., ESGE/SGNA).
- Automated reprocessors: Operate and maintain Automated Endoscope Reprocessors (AER)



and document cycle logs.
- Storage compliance: Hang reprocessed scopes correctly in specialized vertical HEPA-filtered cabinets to prevent bacterial growth.
3. Safety & Inventory Management

- Biopsy handling: Label, log, and safely preserve tissue specimens obtained during biopsies for pathology transit.
- Inventory oversight: Maintain stock levels of high-value disposable GI accessories like clips, wires, and sphincterotomes.
- Fluoroscopy safety: Wear and maintain appropriate radiation safety gear (lead aprons, thyroid shields) during fluoroscopic ERCP cases.

Job Requirements & Qualifications

- Education: Diploma/B. Sc. in Operation Theatre Technology (OTT) or Endoscopy/GI Tech Technology.
- Experience: 1–3 years of dedicated experience inside a high-volume GI Endoscopy suite or Gastro-OT.
- Technical Skills: Mastery of flexible endoscope handling, leak-testing protocols, electrosurgical unit (ESU) settings, and emergency GI bleed management.
