Mechanical Designer – Precision Guitar Connector (10-Part Assembly)
We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Designer / CAD Engineer to create accurate, manufacturing-ready engineering drawings for a professional 1/4-inch guitar connector (audio jack plug) consisting of 10 individual parts.
The connector will be manufactured in volume, so dimensional accuracy, tolerances, fitment, and manufacturability are critical.
Scope of Work
The connector consists of 10 separate components, including:
- Centre/contact pin
- Tip/contact component
- Metal tube/body component
- Insulating component
- Rear threaded component
- Additional insulating/support component
- First solder/contact lug
- Second solder/contact lug
- Metal outer body/housing
- Rear cable-entry/taper component
The selected designer will be required to:
- Physically study and measure our existing connector sample
- Accurately reverse-engineer all 10 individual parts
- Prepare detailed 2D engineering drawings
- Prepare 3D CAD models of every component
- Prepare a complete assembly drawing
- Define all critical dimensions, tolerances, threads, chamfers, radii, knurling and fits
- Identify mating dimensions and assembly clearances
- Specify suitable manufacturing processes for each component
- Make drawings suitable for CNC machining/turning, press/stamping, plastic moulding and other applicable manufacturing processes
- Prepare drawings that can be directly shared with CNC machine suppliers, toolmakers and component manufacturers
- Provide an exploded assembly drawing showing all 10 components and their sequence
- Prepare a BOM (Bill of Materials) with recommended materials
Deliverables
We require:
- 10 × individual component drawings
- 10 × individual 3D CAD models
- Complete assembled 3D model
- Exploded assembly drawing
- Detailed manufacturing drawings with tolerances
- BOM/material specifications
- STEP/STP files
- DWG/DXF files
- PDF engineering drawings
- Original editable CAD/source files
Required Experience
Preference will be given to candidates with experience in:
- Precision mechanical component design
- Reverse engineering from physical samples
- CNC turned components
- Small brass/zinc alloy/steel components
- Sheet-metal stamping
- Plastic insulators/injection-moulded components
- Threads, knurling and press-fit assemblies
- Electrical/audio connectors, plugs, sockets, XLR connectors or similar products
- GD&T; and production engineering drawings
Significant
This is not simply a 3D modelling assignment.
We need someone who understands production engineering and mass manufacturing. The final drawings should be accurate enough for us to manufacture the components and assemble them consistently in production.
We can provide the designer with the physical guitar connector sample for accurate measurement and reverse engineering.
