Key Responsibilities
Diagnostics: Use advanced computerized diagnostic equipment and tools to identify mechanical, electrical, or electronic malfunctions. [1]
Routine Maintenance: Conduct preventive maintenance tasks, including fluid changes, tire rotations, filter replacements, and spark plug changes. [1, 2]
Repairs: Repair or replace defective parts (e.g., brake pads, belts, hoses, and sensors) according to manufacturer specifications. [1, 2]
Testing: Perform system inspections and test-drive vehicles to confirm repairs were successful and secure. [1, 2]
Documentation: Keep accurate logs of parts used, work performed, and vehicle service history. [1, 2]
Customer Service: Explain technical automotive problems and estimated repair costs to service advisors or directly to clients in a transparent, non-technical manner. [1, 2]
Qualifications & Requirements
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent is required. Completion of an automotive technology vocational program or a formal apprenticeship is highly preferred.
Certifications: Certifications from bodies like Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) are a major asset.
Technical Skills: Deep understanding of complex mechanical, electrical, and computer/electronic systems in up-to-date vehicles.
Physical & Hands-on: Manual dexterity, physical stamina to work in various positions, and the ability to lift heavy parts. Usually requires providing your own set of basic hand tools and toolbox.
Licensing: A valid driver's license is mandatory, as mechanics often need to operate and test customer or commercial vehicles. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8]
