Lab Technician – Job Responsibilities in Garment Industry

A Lab Technician in the garment/textile industry is mainly responsible for fabric and garment testing, quality analysis, maintaining test records, and ensuring materials meet required standards and buyer specifications.

Key Job Responsibilities
Fabric Testing
Conduct physical and chemical tests on incoming fabrics.
Check fabric GSM, thickness, width, shrinkage, color fastness, pilling, strength, and other parameters.
Test fabric samples according to approved standards and buyer requirements.
Color & Shade Testing
Conduct shade matching and evaluation.
Check color fastness to washing, rubbing, perspiration, light, water, etc.
Coordinate with dyeing/finishing teams regarding shade-related issues.
Garment Testing
Conduct required tests on finished garments.
Check dimensional stability, appearance, seam performance, fabric strength, and other quality parameters.
Ensure test results meet buyer specifications.
Chemical Testing
Perform basic chemical tests as required for textiles and garments.




Handle laboratory chemicals safely and maintain proper chemical records.
Ensure testing is carried out according to approved procedures.
Sample Preparation
Collect and prepare fabric/garment samples for testing.
Maintain proper identification and traceability of samples.
Ensure samples are tested within the required time.
Laboratory Equipment
Operate and maintain laboratory testing equipment.
Conduct regular calibration and verification of instruments.
Report equipment problems and arrange necessary maintenance.
Documentation & Records
Maintain test reports, test registers, calibration records, and sample records.
Prepare daily/weekly laboratory reports.
Maintain proper documentation for internal and buyer inspections.
Quality Coordination
Coordinate with QA, QC, production, dyeing, finishing, merchandising, and sourcing teams.
