Manager, Software Engineering - Managed Threat Response

Responsibilities

As a Manager, Software Engineering you will build and lead a squad covering Mailroom and Threat Portal, with contributions into our Managed Email Incident Response and Remediation products. This is a genuine build: you will hire the team, onboard it, and get it delivering reliably. Your responsibilities will include:

- Hire, onboard, and retain a new engineering squad, working closely with Recruitment and HR in a highly competitive market.
- Own team-level delivery - commitments, technical debt, on-call load, and stakeholder expectations - holding all of them at once without letting any one collapse.
- Run genuinely developmental 1:1s, set clear expectations, and give honest feedback early rather than late, including the difficult kind.
- Create the conditions for engineers to do their best technical work: enough structure that people know what is expected, enough autonomy that they own their technical decisions.
- Make AI-first engineering a team capability rather than an individual habit - support engineers in building their own agentic development workflows, and hold the quality bar on what those tools produce.
- Know when to coach an engineer through a technical decision and when to make the call yourself, and resolve technical disagreements within the team constructively.
- Partner with Product, Support, and peer engineering teams, representing your teams technical position and delivery risk honestly to senior stakeholders.
- Identify and mitigate technical and delivery risk early,



and monitor cloud resource usage for cost savings that do not compromise performance or reliability.

What Youll Bring

This may be your first formal management role. What matters is that you have already been doing much of the job informally, and that you want to develop engineers more than you want to ship the feature yourself.

- An engineering background you can still use. Hands-on experience building and running backend services at scale, deep enough that you remain credible in design and code review and can ask the right questions even when you are not the one making the call.
- Evidence that you already develop people. Time as a technical lead, mentor, or onboarding owner - a track record of engineers who got better because of you, and of feedback you gave that was uncomfortable to deliver and helpful to receive.
- Proven AI-first engineering practice, and a view on what it means for a team. You have personally built this way with agentic coding tools, and you have a clear position on what AI-mature engineering practice should look like across a squad. We work in Cursor, but we care that you have built this way, not which tool you used.
- Critical judgement over AI output,



applied as a standard. A working understanding of where these tools fail - hallucinated APIs, plausible-but-wrong logic, silent security and performance regressions - and the willingness to hold a team to a quality bar rather than celebrate raw throughput.
- Delivery ownership across a team. Planning, execution, and predictable delivery of complex work; comfort with the trade-off between delivery speed and engineering quality, and the ability to explain the call you made to both engineers and executives.
- Hiring and team building. Experience attracting, assessing, and onboarding engineering talent, or clear evidence you have been central to it.
- Strong communication across distance. You explain technical concepts credibly to technical and non-technical audiences, and you work effectively with colleagues distributed across multiple time zones.
- A real appetite for the shift from doing to developing. The instinct to solve problems directly comes from genuine competence; the defining challenge of this role is redirecting that energy into the people around you.
- Nice to have: prior work in cybersecurity or email security; experience managing on-call rotations and incident response; and experience leading distributed or newly formed teams.
