GET Trainee – Engine Durability Engineer
3W Powertrain | CNG | Petrol | Flex-Fuel
Position Overview
We are looking for a GET Trainee – Engine Durability Engineer to support engine durability testing, validation, test data analysis, component inspection, and failure investigation activities for 3W CNG, Petrol, and Flex-Fuel powertrains.
The trainee will work closely with experienced engineers and testing teams and will gain hands-on exposure to engine dynamometer testing, durability test cycles, engine performance monitoring, test instrumentation, post-test teardown inspection, failure analysis, and validation activities.
The role is suitable for a Mechanical/Automobile Engineering graduate with a strong interest in IC engines, powertrain development, testing, and durability engineering.
Key Responsibilities
1. Engine Durability Testing
- Support execution of engine durability and endurance tests on engine dynamometers and vehicles.
- Execute assigned durability test cycles as per approved test procedures and schedules.
- Support performance, endurance, overload, thermal, and other engine validation tests.
- Monitor engine operating conditions throughout the test.
- Ensure proper test preparation, instrumentation, data acquisition, and test documentation.
- Coordinate with test technicians and senior engineers for smooth execution of durability tests.
2. Monitoring of Engine Durability Parameters
Monitor and record critical parameters during durability testing, including:
- Engine speed and torque
- Oil pressure and oil temperature
- Coolant / cylinder head temperature
- Fuel consumption
- Oil consumption
- Blow-by
- Exhaust emissions
- Engine temperatures
- Fuel rail pressure for CNG engines
- Engine performance and torque/power degradation
- Abnormal noise, vibration, leakage, or other observations
Identify abnormal trends and immediately communicate deviations to the concerned engineer.
3. Test Data Analysis
- Collect, organize, and analyze data generated from engine dynamometer and vehicle durability testing.
- Analyze test trends using MS Excel and other relevant engineering tools.
- Prepare graphs, trend plots, data summaries, and test reports.
- Compare pre-test and post-test performance to identify degradation.
- Identify abnormal trends in temperature, pressure, oil consumption, blow-by, performance, emissions, and other durability parameters.
- Support correlation of test results with component condition and failure observations.
4. Post-Durability Teardown & Inspection
- Support teardown of engines after completion of durability tests.
- Inspect critical engine components for wear, damage, deformation, overheating, leakage, and abnormal conditions.
- Support measurement and documentation of component wear.
- Compare inspection results against drawings, specifications, and acceptance criteria.
- Identify and document abnormal wear patterns and failure indications.
- Prepare post-durability teardown and inspection reports.
5. Failure Analysis & Root Cause Investigation
- Support investigation of component failures and durability issues.
- Participate in structured problem-solving using:
- 5-Why analysis
- Fishbone/Ishikawa analysis
- Failure Mode analysis
- Basic FMEA methodology
- Develop understanding of common engine durability failure mechanisms, including:
- Valve seat recession
- Valve train wear
- Piston and piston-ring wear
- Cylinder scuffing
- Bearing wear
- Crankshaft / connecting rod issues
- Lubrication failures
- Thermal fatigue
- Excessive oil consumption
- Blow-by increase
- Cooling system-related failures
- Support corrective and preventive action evaluation under guidance from senior engineers.
6. CNG, Petrol & Flex-Fuel Engine Durability
- Develop practical understanding of durability characteristics of CNG, Petrol, and Flex-Fuel engines.
- Support durability evaluation of CNG fuel-system components and engine systems.
- Monitor CNG fuel rail pressure and other relevant fuel-system parameters.
- Understand the effect of different fuels on:
- Combustion
- Engine temperature
- Lubrication
- Valve and valve-seat durability
- Piston/ring durability
- Engine performance
- Emissions
- Support evaluation of engine durability under different operating conditions and fuel types.
7. Performance & Durability Correlation
- Support comparison of pre-durability and post-durability engine performance.
- Analyze changes in:
- Power
- Torque
- Fuel consumption
- Oil consumption
- Blow-by
- Emissions
- Thermal behavior
- Support identification of performance degradation and its possible relationship with component wear or failure.
8. Validation & Documentation
Prepare and maintain:
- Durability test plans and schedules
- Test checklists
- Test data records
- Durability test reports
- Teardown reports
- Component inspection reports
- Data analysis sheets
- DVP&R; execution records
- Failure analysis reports
- Validation status reports
Maintain proper traceability of test engines, test conditions, test hours/kilometers, test results, and component inspection findings.
Required Technical Skills
- Basic to valuable understanding of Internal Combustion Engines and 3W Powertrains.
- Basic understanding of:
- Engine combustion
- Lubrication system
- Cooling system
- Valve train
- Piston-cylinder assembly
- Crank train
- Fuel systems
- Ignition system
- Exhaust and emission systems
- Understanding of engine performance and durability parameters.
- Basic knowledge of engine dynamometer testing.
- Basic understanding of engineering measurements and component inspection.
- Ability to read engineering drawings and specifications.
- Good working knowledge of MS Excel for data analysis and reporting.
- Basic knowledge of 5-Why, Fishbone, FMEA, and problem-solving techniques.
- Exposure to data acquisition and engine test instrumentation will be an advantage.

Education & Experience
Education:
- B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical / Automobile Engineering.
Experience:
- GET / Fresher – 0 to 1 year experience.
- Internship or academic project experience in IC engines, engine testing, powertrain, vehicle testing, or durability engineering will be an advantage.
