Job Description

Surfica India Limited is looking for an experienced Lab Technician for our HPL / Decorative Laminate Manufacturing Unit.

The candidate will be responsible for continuous batch-wise quality testing and monitoring of incoming raw materials, resin batches, impregnated papers, process materials and finished HPL laminate sheets.

The candidate must have strong practical knowledge of the HPL manufacturing process, resin preparation, paper impregnation, hot pressing and finished laminate quality parameters.

Minimum 2 years of experience in an HPL / Decorative Laminate manufacturing plant is mandatory.

Key Responsibilities

1. Incoming Raw Material Testing

Perform inspection and testing of incoming raw materials used in HPL manufacturing, including:

- Kraft paper
- Decorative paper
- Overlay paper
- Phenol, melamine and other resin raw materials
- Additives, hardeners and other process chemicals

Ensure incoming materials meet approved specifications before release for production.

2. Resin Batch Testing & Control

Carry out continuous batch-wise testing of PF and MF resin and maintain proper test records.

Key testing parameters include:

- Viscosity
- pH
- Gel time
- Solid content
- Specific gravity / density
- Other required resin parameters

Identify any variation from approved specifications and immediately coordinate with the Resin / Production / Quality team for corrective action.

3. Impregnated Paper Testing

Perform regular and batch-wise testing of impregnated kraft, decorative and overlay papers.

Monitor parameters such as:

- Resin content
- Volatile content
- Flow
- Paper GSM
- Treated paper weight
- Moisture / drying condition
- Impregnation consistency





Ensure batch-wise conformity before material is released for pressing.

4. Finished HPL Laminate Testing

Conduct routine and batch-wise testing of finished laminate sheets, including:

- Thickness
- Dimensional checks
- Surface quality
- Gloss / finish consistency
- Colour and shade matching
- Warpage / flatness
- Bonding / delamination
- Boiling water resistance
- Blister / cracking
- Surface defects
- Sanding quality
- Other physical and performance tests as per company quality standards

5. Continuous Process Quality Monitoring

- Monitor quality throughout the manufacturing process, not only at the finished-product stage.
- Conduct regular sampling and testing from production batches.

- Maintain batch-wise traceability of all test results.
- Compare actual results against approved specifications and control limits.
- Immediately report abnormal results or process deviations.
- Coordinate with Resin, Impregnation/Dryer, Press, Production and Quality teams for corrective action.
- Assist in identifying root causes of recurring quality problems.
- Support corrective and preventive actions to avoid repeat quality issues.

6. Laboratory & Quality Documentation

- Maintain daily and batch-wise laboratory testing records.
- Maintain incoming raw material inspection records.
- Maintain calibration and testing instrument records.
- Prepare rejection / deviation reports wherever required.
- Maintain reference and retention samples.
- Support ISO,



internal audit and customer quality documentation.
- Ensure laboratory instruments are properly maintained and calibrated.

Mandatory Experience & Skills

- Minimum 2 years of practical experience in an HPL / Decorative Laminate manufacturing plant is mandatory.
- Candidates having only general laboratory experience from unrelated industries will not be considered.
- Good practical understanding of the complete HPL manufacturing process.
- Hands-on experience in raw material, resin, impregnated paper and finished laminate testing.
- Practical knowledge of PF and MF resin testing.
- Understanding of the relationship between resin properties, impregnation parameters, pressing conditions and finished laminate quality.
- Ability to identify quality deviations and coordinate immediately with production for corrective action.
- Familiarity with laboratory instruments used in the laminate industry.
- Valuable record-keeping and reporting skills.
- Basic knowledge of MS Excel and computer-based reporting.
- Knowledge of relevant HPL quality standards and ISO documentation will be an advantage.

Qualification

Any of the following:

- B.Sc. Chemistry
- Diploma in Chemical Engineering
- B.Tech / B.E. Chemical Engineering

Relevant HPL / Decorative Laminate manufacturing experience is mandatory irrespective of qualification.

Ideal Candidate Profile

We are specifically looking for a hands-on Lab Technician from the HPL / Decorative Laminate industry, rather than a general laboratory technician.

The candidate should be capable of independently performing continuous quality checks from incoming raw materials through resin preparation, impregnation and pressing up to finished laminate inspection, maintaining proper batch-wise records and immediately highlighting any deviation that may affect product quality.
