Pet Bathing & Hygiene
- Bathe dogs and cats according to the hospital's grooming and hygiene standards.
- Select and use appropriate shampoos and cleaning products as instructed.
- Dry pets safely using towels, dryers, or other approved equipment.
- Brush and comb pets to remove loose hair and minor tangles.
- Clean basic areas such as ears, paws, and coat, following hospital procedures.
- Check pets for visible skin issues, wounds, ticks, fleas, unusual lumps, or discomfort and immediately inform the veterinarian or senior staff.
- Ensure pets remain calm, safe, and comfortable throughout the bathing process.
- Clean and disinfect bathing tubs, tables, dryers, brushes, and other grooming equipment after use.
2. Grooming & Haircut Support
- Assist the qualified groomer during dog and cat haircuts.
- Safely hold and position pets during clipping, trimming, brushing, and styling.
- Help calm anxious, nervous, or uncooperative pets using approved humane handling techniques.
- Prepare grooming equipment before each appointment.
- Assist with brushing, de-matting and coat preparation as directed by the groomer.
- Hand over required grooming tools and materials to the groomer during procedures.
- Clean and organize grooming tools after every pet.
- Maintain cleanliness of the grooming room and workstations.
- Assist in safely moving pets to and from grooming areas.
Note: Haircutting, clipping, or other grooming procedures should be performed only according to the employee's training and authorization.
3. Support During Veterinary Procedures & Operations
- Assist veterinarians and veterinary staff in safely handling and restraining pets when required.
- Monitor and take care of pets before and after procedures as instructed by the veterinarian.
- Ensure operated or sedated pets are kept in a safe, clean, quiet, and comfortable area.
- Observe pets for visible signs of discomfort, stress, vomiting, bleeding, breathing difficulty, abnormal behaviour, or other concerns and immediately alert the veterinarian.
- Assist with transferring pets between consultation rooms, operation areas, recovery areas, cages, and wards.
- Help prepare recovery areas, cages, bedding, and basic equipment.
- Keep pets comfortable by ensuring appropriate bedding, cleanliness, and access to water or food only when authorized by the veterinary team.
- Follow all instructions from the veterinarian regarding patient handling and care.
Important: The assistant must not independently diagnose, prescribe medication, administer treatment, or perform procedures unless specifically trained, authorized, and permitted under applicable hospital policies and veterinary regulations.
4. Pet Care & Monitoring
- Monitor pets admitted for treatment, surgery, grooming, or observation.
- Ensure pets are safely housed and identified correctly.
- Check that cages, kennels, and recovery areas are clean and hygienic.
- Provide food and water only according to the veterinarian's or hospital's instructions.
- Take pets for toilet breaks or walks when required and appropriate.
- Observe changes in behaviour, appetite, activity, or general condition and report them to the responsible veterinarian.
- Handle dogs and cats gently, safely, and professionally at all times.
5. Cleaning & Infection Control
- Clean and disinfect grooming tables, bathing areas, cages, kennels, and equipment.
- Follow hospital protocols for infection prevention and hygiene.
- Dispose of waste according to hospital procedures.
- Ensure towels, bedding, and grooming materials are cleaned and stored properly.
- Maintain separation and hygiene procedures between different pets where required.
- Report damaged equipment or unsafe working conditions immediately.
6. Customer & Pet Owner Support
- Receive pets from owners politely and professionally.
- Confirm the pet's name and basic service requirements before grooming or bathing.
- Assist in safely handing over pets to owners after services.
- Inform the responsible veterinarian, groomer, or receptionist if an owner raises a medical or grooming concern.
- Maintain a calm and professional attitude when dealing with pets and pet owners.
Daily Responsibilities Checklist
Before Starting Work
- Prepare bathing and grooming areas.
- Check cleanliness of equipment.
- Arrange towels, brushes, combs, shampoos, and grooming tools.
- Ensure cages and pet holding areas are clean and ready.
During the Day
- Bathe scheduled pets.
- Dry and brush pets.
- Support groomers during haircuts and grooming.
- Assist doctors and veterinary staff with safe pet handling when required.
- Monitor pets waiting for, undergoing, or recovering from procedures.
- Maintain cleanliness throughout the day.
- Report any health or behavioural concerns immediately.
End of Day
- Clean and disinfect all work areas.
- Clean and store grooming equipment.
- Dispose of waste correctly.
- Ensure all pets are safely handed over or properly accommodated.
- Report pending tasks or pet concerns to the next shift or supervisor.
