Senior Engineer – CFD | Conjugate Heat Transfer (CHT) & Thermal Analysis
Experience Level
3–6 years
Domain
Thermal Management / Turbomachinery / Aerospace Systems / Automotive
Role Summary
We are looking for a Senior CFD Engineer with strong experience in Conjugate Heat Transfer (CHT), CFD and thermal analysis to support the design and development of complex engineering systems.
The candidate will be responsible for independently performing CFD simulations, interpreting results, identifying thermal and flow-related design issues, and providing engineering recommendations for product improvement.
The role will involve close collaboration with design, analysis and global engineering teams and will provide opportunities to work on complex turbomachinery and thermal management applications.
Key Responsibilities
- Independently perform steady-state and transient CFD/CHT simulations for complex engineering applications involving conjugate heat transfer between fluids and solid structures.
- Develop appropriate CFD models, including geometry preparation, computational domain definition, meshing, boundary conditions and solver setup.
- Apply sound understanding of fluid mechanics, heat transfer and thermal sciences to define appropriate simulation approaches.
- Develop appropriate mesh strategies, including near-wall resolution,
boundary-layer treatment and refinement in regions with high flow or thermal gradients.
- Analyze temperature distribution, heat transfer, thermal gradients, pressure drop, flow characteristics and other relevant engineering parameters.
- Interpret simulation results and translate them into meaningful engineering and design recommendations.
- Identify potential design improvements based on CFD/thermal analysis and evaluate their effectiveness through appropriate simulations.
- Support optimization of cooling strategies, thermal performance and flow characteristics.
- Perform post-processing of CFD results and generate relevant plots, contours and engineering reports.
- Support transfer of relevant thermal loads, temperature distributions and heat-flux results for subsequent thermal stress / FEA analysis.
- Correlate simulation results with available test or experimental data and support improvement of simulation methodologies.
- Troubleshoot convergence, modelling and simulation-related issues and implement appropriate corrective actions.
- Document simulation methodology, assumptions, results, conclusions and recommendations in accordance with project and customer requirements.
Required Skills & Experience
- B.E./B.Tech./M.E./M.Tech. in Mechanical, Aerospace, Thermal or related engineering discipline.
- 3–6 years of relevant experience in CFD, thermal analysis or related engineering simulation.
- Robust working experience with commercial CFD software such as ANSYS Fluent / STAR-CCM+ or equivalent.
- Good understanding of CFD fundamentals, fluid mechanics and heat transfer.
- Practical experience in Conjugate Heat Transfer (CHT) simulations.
- Experience with steady-state and transient thermal/CFD simulations.
- Good understanding of meshing techniques, boundary conditions, solver settings and convergence criteria.
- Experience in post-processing and interpretation of CFD simulation results.
- Knowledge of thermal stress analysis and interaction with FEA teams would be an advantage.
- Good understanding of gas turbine, compressor, turbomachinery or related thermal-fluid systems would be preferred.
- Working knowledge of UG NX or any CAD package would be an added advantage.
Additional Skills
- Knowledge of Python or other scripting tools for post-processing, automation or model preparation would be an advantage.
- Ability to automate repetitive CFD pre-processing/post-processing activities.
- Good understanding of advanced fluid dynamics principles and their application to engineering problems.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Positive communication and technical documentation skills.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaborate with global engineering teams.
Senior Engineer – Role Expectations
The Senior Engineer is expected to:
- Independently execute moderately complex to complex CFD/CHT simulations.
- Select appropriate modelling and simulation approaches based on engineering requirements.
- Demonstrate sound engineering judgement while interpreting simulation results.
- Provide practical design recommendations, rather than limiting the role to simulation execution.
- Troubleshoot modelling, meshing and convergence issues with limited guidance.
- Interact effectively with design, FEA, testing and global engineering teams.
- Contribute to development of simulation methodologies, best practices and reusable approaches.
- Provide technical guidance and knowledge-sharing support to junior engineers.
