Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Senior Engineer / Engineer – Paint Shop to lead paint shop operations and ensure superior surface finishing of automotive and commercial vehicle components. The role involves managing end-to-end painting processes, maintaining consistent product quality, optimizing production efficiency, reducing paint defects, and ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and environmental standards. The ideal candidate should possess strong technical expertise in paint application processes, equipment maintenance, process improvement, and cross-functional coordination within an automotive manufacturing setting.
Key ResponsibilitiesProduction Planning & Shop Floor Management
- Plan, organize, and monitor daily paint shop operations to achieve production targets while maintaining quality and delivery commitments.
- Ensure optimum utilization of manpower, paint materials, equipment, and utilities for maximum operational efficiency.
- Monitor line performance and take proactive measures to minimize production losses and downtime.
- Coordinate with Production Planning and Manufacturing teams to ensure smooth workflow and timely execution of production schedules.
Paint Process Control
- Supervise and control the complete painting process, including surface preparation, pre-treatment, phosphating, primer application, base coat, top coat, curing, and final inspection.
- Monitor critical process parameters such as film thickness, gloss level, adhesion, paint viscosity, curing temperature, colour consistency, and surface finish.
- Ensure all painting activities comply with approved process parameters, work instructions, and customer quality requirements.
Quality Assurance & Defect Analysis
- Maintain consistent paint quality by implementing effective process controls and inspection systems.
- Identify, analyze, and eliminate paint defects including orange peel, blistering, sagging, pinholes, poor adhesion,
dust contamination, runs, and other surface imperfections.
- Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) to reduce rejection, rework, and customer complaints.
- Support internal quality audits, customer inspections, and process validation activities.
Equipment Maintenance & Reliability
- Coordinate preventive, predictive, and breakdown maintenance activities for spray booths, paint circulation systems, curing ovens, electrostatic painting equipment, conveyors, compressors, and associated utilities.
- Ensure equipment reliability, process stability, and maximum machine availability through effective maintenance planning.
- Work closely with the Maintenance team to troubleshoot equipment issues and improve operational efficiency.
Continuous Improvement & Cost Optimization
- Drive TPM, Kaizen, Lean Manufacturing, and 5S initiatives to improve productivity and workplace efficiency.
- Identify opportunities to reduce paint consumption, material wastage, rejection, rework, and cycle time.
- Implement process improvements aimed at enhancing paint transfer efficiency, quality, and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
- Participate in new product trials, process development, and production validation activities.
Cross-Functional Coordination
- Collaborate with Production, Quality, Maintenance, Manufacturing Engineering, Supply Chain, and New Product Development (NPD) teams to ensure smooth production operations.
- Resolve process-related issues through effective coordination and timely decision-making.
- Support implementation of engineering changes, process modifications, and customer-specific requirements.
Documentation & Compliance
- Prepare and maintain production reports, SOPs, process sheets, inspection records, maintenance logs, and quality documentation.
- Ensure compliance with IATF 16949 requirements, Control Plans, PFMEA,
and other quality management standards.
- Maintain adherence to company policies, statutory requirements, and environmental regulations.
Safety, Environment & Workplace Management
- Ensure strict compliance with all plant safety procedures and safe operating practices.
- Promote a safe working environment through hazard identification, risk assessment, and corrective actions.
- Ensure compliance with environmental and pollution control norms related to paint shop operations.
- Sustain effective implementation of 5S and good housekeeping practices across the department.
Required Skills & Competencies
- Strong knowledge of automotive paint shop operations and industrial painting processes.
- Hands-on experience in spray painting, electrostatic painting, liquid painting systems, paint mixing equipment, spray booths, curing ovens, and conveyor systems.
- Good understanding of surface preparation, pre-treatment, phosphating, primer, base coat, top coat, and curing processes.
- Knowledge of paint quality inspection instruments such as Dry Film Thickness (DFT) Gauge, Gloss Meter, Adhesion Tester, and Colour Measurement Equipment.
- Experience in paint defect analysis, process optimization, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Working knowledge of TPM, 5S, PFMEA, Control Plan, Kaizen, Lean Manufacturing, and Quality Management Systems.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, process documentation, and manufacturing specifications.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and team management skills.
Preferred Industry Experience
- Automotive or Commercial Vehicle Manufacturing Industry (Mandatory).
- Experience in chassis, frame, body, fabricated components, or automotive component paint shop operations will be preferred.
