About The Study

This research study explores how climate change is shaping the gendered experience of occupational health, safety, and overall well-being of workers in India’s urban development sector, with a focused empirical lens on women and queer development workers in Mumbai and urban Maharashtra. It seeks to understand how climate-related stressors such as heat, pollution, and extreme weather intersect with existing social and economic inequalities to impact workers’ daily realities, access to rights, and ability to sustain livelihoods.

Drawing on these insights, the study will generate actionable recommendations to strengthen labour protections, enhance organisations’ adaptive capacities, and advance more equitable and climate-responsive urban development labour practices. The research methodology is rooted in Feminist Participatory Action Research (FPAR) techniques, and incorporates photovoice journaling and a survey, enabling participants to document and reflect on their lived experiences. This study is supported in part by the Gender and Workplace Data Alliance (GEDA) Small Grants Program 2025.
