ROLE OVERVIEW
Happence is developing a custom digital platform that brings together assessments, wearable and device data, AI tools, and external integrations to deliver a seamless experience for programme participants and administrators. We are looking for a Senior Tech Lead to own our technology strategy and oversee the development of this platform end to end, ensuring the build is robust, scalable, secure and aligned with our product and programme requirements.
The successful candidate will act as the technical owner and internal point of accountability, working closely with external development partners while keeping timelines, technical decisions, quality, and deliverables on track. The immediate priority is to lead the custom app development programme, currently expected to run over approximately 6 to 8 months.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead the complete development of the Happence custom app, covering architecture, development,
testing, deployment, and ongoing improvement.
- Provide technical leadership across backend systems, databases, APIs, integrations, and overall application architecture.
- Work closely with external development partners to define requirements, review technical approaches, monitor progress, and ensure delivery against agreed timelines, challenging proposed approaches where they do not meet requirements.
- Review and audit code, documentation, architecture, and development practices, and establish standards for development, testing, security, data management, and deployment.
- Oversee integrations with external systems, APIs, assessment platforms, wearable and device data, and AI tools across the Happence ecosystem.
- Identify technical risks early, recommend solutions or alternatives, and translate business and product requirements into practical technical decisions.
- Collaborate with project , programme, operations teams, and mentor future technology team members as the organisation scales.
CANDIDATE PROFILE
- 5 to 7 years of software development experience preferred, with progression into a senior or technical leadership role; robust candidates with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience are welcome to apply.
- Must have previously worked on building and delivering a live mobile or web application.
- Strong backend development skills, with Java being important alongside Python, SQL, and other relevant languages, plus solid experience with APIs, databases, and cloud systems.
- Undergraduate and Post graduate Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer
Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- AI literate, with the ability to understand, assess, and audit development work produced with AI tools, including the underlying code, rather than relying on generated outputs.
- Experience managing or working closely with external technology vendors or development agencies,
with the confidence to question technical decisions and push back where necessary.
- Comfortable operating as a generalist in a startup environment, moving between strategy and detailed technical review, and able to explain technical issues clearly to business stakeholders.
- Familiarity with data protection and security practices for sensitive personal and health-related data,
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
We are looking for a technical owner rather than an individual developer: someone who understands the bigger product vision, can examine code, architecture, integrations, and implementation in detail, and is confident enough to say when an approach will not work, propose a better alternative, and hold external partners accountable to the required standard.
