About the Role
Applix is looking for an experienced Senior SQL Database Administrator (DBA) to join our team full-time and support a large-scale enterprise environment at a client location in Bangalore.
This is a hands-on, client-facing role for an experienced DBA who has operated mission-critical Microsoft SQL Server environments and is comfortable taking ownership of performance, availability, security, disaster recovery, and production support.
You will work closely with Applix, client infrastructure, cloud, application, and engineering teams to manage and modernize database environments spanning on-premises and Microsoft Azure infrastructure.
The position requires 5 days per week onsite at the client location in Bangalore and may include on-call support and planned weekend maintenance.
What You'll Do
SQL Server Administration
- Administer and support enterprise Microsoft SQL Server 2016, 2019, 2022, and newer environments.
- Perform database installation, configuration, patching, upgrades, migrations, and lifecycle management.
- Design and manage backup, restore, recovery, and database maintenance strategies.
- Ensure availability, integrity, reliability, and performance of production databases.
- Troubleshoot complex production database incidents and provide L2/L3 support.
Performance Tuning & Optimization
- Diagnose and resolve SQL Server performance issues involving queries, execution plans, indexes, locking, blocking, memory, CPU, storage, and I/O.
- Analyze execution plans and develop effective indexing and query optimization strategies.
- Perform proactive database health checks, capacity planning, and performance analysis.
- Partner with application teams to improve schema, query, and database design.
High Availability & Disaster Recovery
- Design, implement, administer,
and troubleshoot SQL Server Always On Availability Groups.
- Support Windows Server Failover Clustering, replication, and related HA technologies.
- Define and maintain recovery objectives, backup strategies, and disaster recovery procedures.
- Participate in DR exercises and validate recovery procedures for critical systems.
Azure & Hybrid Database Environments
- Manage SQL Server workloads across on-premises and Microsoft Azure environments.
- Support Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and SQL Server on Azure VMs.
- Support migrations and modernization of database workloads into Azure.
- Optimize cloud database performance, reliability, scalability, and cost.
- Troubleshoot hybrid connectivity, availability, and database infrastructure issues.
Security & Compliance
- Manage SQL Server users, roles, permissions, authentication, and access controls.
- Implement and support database security capabilities including TDE, encryption, and auditing.
- Support enterprise security, compliance, vulnerability remediation, and audit requirements.
Automation & Monitoring
- Automate repetitive database administration and operational activities using T-SQL, PowerShell, and related tooling.
- Implement proactive database monitoring, alerting, and health checks.
- Work with tools such as Azure Monitor, SQL Server native tooling, SCOM, SolarWinds, or equivalent enterprise monitoring platforms.
- Develop and maintain operational documentation, SOPs, and runbooks.
Enterprise Production Support
- Provide L2/L3 support for database incidents, problems, and production issues.
- Participate in change management, release,
patching, and maintenance activities.
- Work with global teams across multiple time zones.
- Participate in an on-call rotation and occasional planned weekend maintenance.
What We're Looking For
- 8–12+ years of SQL Server database administration experience in enterprise or production environments.
- Deep hands-on expertise with Microsoft SQL Server, preferably including SQL Server 2016, 2019, and 2022.
- Strong experience with performance tuning, query optimization, indexing, and execution-plan analysis.
- Strong knowledge of backup, restore, recovery models, and disaster recovery.
- Production experience with Always On Availability Groups and Windows Server Failover Clustering.
- Strong understanding of SQL Server architecture, memory, storage, and I/O.
- Solid T-SQL skills.
- Experience administering SQL Server workloads in Microsoft Azure.
- Experience troubleshooting complex production database issues.
- Experience with enterprise monitoring and alerting.
- Understanding of ITIL-based incident, problem, and change management processes.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work directly with client and cross-functional technical teams.
Nice to Have
- Azure SQL Database and Azure SQL Managed Instance experience.
- SQL Server on Azure VM experience.
- PowerShell automation.
- SSIS, ETL, or enterprise data integration experience.
- Database CI/CD or DevOps experience.
- Exposure to PostgreSQL or Oracle.
- Microsoft Azure Database Administrator or related certifications.
- ITIL Foundation certification.
Work Requirements

- 5 days per week onsite at the client location in Bangalore.
- Comfortable working directly with client stakeholders and technical teams.
- Willingness to participate in on-call support and scheduled weekend maintenance when required.
