Senior Software Developer – .NET

Pune, India

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Backend Developer with strong .NET expertise and a genuinely AI-first approach to software development, to join our development team in Pune. You will be one of the core engineers re-platforming a long-established .NET desktop product, used widely across the UK healthcare sector, from a client-based architecture to a cloud-native one, built on a React and Next.js frontend, a .NET backend and AWS. There is real influence over architectural decisions here rather than inherited ones.

What makes this role different is how we intend to build it. AI-assisted development is our primary delivery model for this programme, not a side experiment or a productivity add-on, so we need a developer who already builds production software this way. If AI is still an occasional convenience alongside a traditional workflow, this is probably not the right fit.

Communication matters as much as engineering ability. You will work directly and daily with a UK-based architect and senior developer who hold two decades of domain knowledge in this product, and regularly with colleagues across Development, QA and Support in Pune and the UK. Much of your effectiveness will come from how well you draw out, question and document knowledge that lives in the codebase and in people's heads, so strong written and spoken English is essential.

We need someone self-motivated and proactive who can use their own initiative. Once work is agreed, we expect you to take it from there with minimal hand-holding: resolving ambiguity by asking the right questions early, taking ownership of issues through to resolution, and coming back with progress rather than waiting to be unblocked. This is not an outsourced model where tasks are handed down.

As the programme grows, the role is also likely to take on light technical leadership of one to three developers in Pune, while each of them keeps their own direct working relationship with UK colleagues.

We deliver incrementally in sprints within an Agile (Scrum) environment, with a solid emphasis on collaboration

How we work with AI

We build enterprise-scale applications for government bodies and large organisations in regulated environments, where the bar for correctness, security and auditability is high. Our adoption of AI has been deliberate rather than slow: we followed a crawl, walk, run principle, asking teams to start narrow and expand as confidence grew rather than mandating AI across the board.

That confidence has now built. Teams are seeing materially increased output with AI's help, and this programme is where we step up the pace, which is a large part of why we are hiring for this role. Guardrails and a human-in-the-loop approach remain non-negotiable, and we expect a developer who regards that as good engineering rather than friction. In practice:

- Agentic coding tools are our default means of implementation,

with the majority of hands-on implementation work carried out under close human direction.
- AI output is treated as a draft and reviewed as rigorously as a colleague's pull request. Whoever ships the code is accountable for it, however it was written.
- Architecture, correctness, security, data integrity and long-term maintainability remain firmly the developer's responsibility.
- We are actively exploring spec-driven development (like OpenSpec) so that agreed specifications, rather than chat history, drive implementation.

Key responsibilities

- Design, develop and maintain high-quality backend services and RESTful APIs in .NET and ASP.NET Core, to agreed architectural and design standards, using AI-assisted workflows as your primary means of delivery.
- Decompose complex features into specifications and implementation plans precise enough for both people and coding agents to execute reliably.
- Take ownership of complex backend components from design through to production, remaining accountable for correctness, security and maintainability, and reviewing AI-generated code critically for hallucinated APIs, unsafe patterns, silent behaviour changes and missing edge cases.
- Implement efficient data access using Entity Framework Core against PostgreSQL, with sound schema design and query optimisation.
- Work with the UK-based architect and senior developer to understand and document domain behaviour held in the legacy codebase, using AI tooling to accelerate comprehension of unfamiliar code.
- Contribute to the team's shared AI development assets, including context and rules files, specifications, prompt patterns, reusable workflows and automated quality gates, so the whole team's throughput improves, not only your own.
- Contribute to backend technical direction and best practice, collaborate with frontend developers on API design and integration with the React and Next.js applications, extending your own changes into the frontend where a feature spans both, resolve complex defects and support escalations at root cause, and mentor less experienced developers in effective and responsible AI-assisted development.

While we require backend expertise, the candidate should be confident at using AI to develop full stack as it may be difficult to separate the two in feature development.

AI-first delivery experience

- Sustained, hands-on use of agentic coding tools such as Claude Code, Cursor or GitHub Copilot agent mode as your main development workflow on production software, rather than occasional assistance.

- At least one substantial feature or product delivered where a significant part of the implementation was AI-generated under your direction, with accountability for making that output trustworthy.
- A disciplined approach to planning before generating, using planning or architect modes, written specifications, decomposition and constraints set up front.
- A realistic understanding of where AI-assisted development fails and how to detect it, and the discipline to treat AI output as a draft to be reviewed as rigorously as a colleague's pull request.
- Practical use of AI beyond code generation: test design and coverage, large-scale refactoring and migration, legacy code comprehension, documentation and code review.
- Confidence in using AI assistance to work effectively outside your core depth, including contributing to the React and Next.js frontend where a feature spans the full stack. Backend is where we need genuine depth; frontend seniority is not expected.

To be clear about scope: we mean building software with AI, not building AI features into products. Experience of the latter is welcome but is not what this role is about.

Engineering and communication

- Typically 4 to 9 years of professional experience developing backend applications.
- Strong hands-on experience with .NET and ASP.NET Core, with proven RESTful API design.
- Strong relational database experience, PostgreSQL in particular, including efficient SQL, schema design and query optimisation, with solid Entity Framework Core knowledge.
- Strong understanding of application architecture, service design and long-term maintainability, with awareness of performance, security, resilience and scalability, and experience designing and maintaining unit and integration tests.
- Proficient use of Git and GitHub, containerisation with Docker, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Demonstrable ability to work autonomously, plus some experience of technical leadership such as mentoring, code review or leading a small team, and the appetite to grow into it.
- Excellent written and spoken business English, and the confidence to question, challenge and clarify with senior colleagues in the UK.

Additional desirable qualities

- Hands-on experience with AWS.
- Experience of spec-driven development using OpenSpec, GitHub Spec Kit or a similar framework.
- Experience building shared AI development assets for a team, such as context and rules files, prompt patterns, reusable workflows and automated quality gates.
- Proven ability to manage context in large codebases, including project instructions and structuring long work so that quality does not degrade, with deliberate choice between models and modes for different classes of work.
- Experience of re-platforming or modernising a legacy application into a modern web architecture.
- Experience in a regulated domain such as healthcare, and understanding of data protection regulations such as GDPR.
- Familiarity with Nx mono-repo structures, and observability tooling such as Prometheus and Grafana.
