Senior Lead Backend Engineer / SDE III
Tech Stack: Python | Microsoft Azure | PostgreSQL / SQL
Position Summary
We are looking for a Senior Lead Backend Engineer to own the backend architecture and development of a payments-focused Dispute Management Platform designed to manage disputes, chargebacks, prevention alerts, evidence, merchant risk, analytics, compliance monitoring, automation, and reporting. This is a hands-on technical leadership role. The ideal candidate can design the architecture, build production-quality Python services, establish the PostgreSQL data model, define API standards, implement Azure infrastructure patterns, and guide other engineers as the product moves from prototype to production.
The engineer will work closely with Product, Payments, Risk, Compliance, Operations, Data, AI, and frontend engineering teams.
CORE TECHNOLOGY STACK
- Python
- PostgreSQL / advanced SQL
- Microsoft Azure
- REST APIs
- Event-driven and asynchronous processing
- Docker / containerized services
- Git and CI/CD
- API integrations
- Azure monitoring and observability
Experience with FastAPI, SQLAlchemy, Alembic, Azure Database for PostgreSQL, Azure Service Bus, Azure Functions, Azure Container Apps/App Service/AKS, Azure Blob Storage, Key Vault, Entra ID, Application Insights, and Azure Monitor is highly desirable.
Key Responsibilities
Backend Architecture &
- Technical Leadership
- Own the overall backend architecture for the Dispute Management Platform.
- Translate product requirements and the existing data-field dictionary into a scalable production data model.
- Establish architectural standards for Python services, APIs, database access, asynchronous jobs, integrations, security, logging, testing, and deployment.
- Make technical decisions around service boundaries, database design, queues, caching, background workers, file storage, and integration patterns.
- Design the platform to support increasing numbers of merchants, disputes, transactions, alerts, users, and automated workflows.
- Remain hands-on in development and contribute production code alongside the engineering team.
- Conduct architecture and code reviews and mentor backend engineers.
Dispute &
- Case Management
- Design and build backend services for case creation and dispute intake, network reason codes, workflow transitions, assignment and queue management, evidence deadlines, SLA calculations, analyst flags, evidence scoring, predicted win probability, recommended actions, comments, mentions, activity, timeline events, notifications, case history, and auditability.
- Ensure workflow transitions remain consistent, traceable, and transactionally safe.
Evidence Management
- Build services for evidence checklists, evidence status, metadata, secure attachment storage, upload and retrieval, automated attachment, reminders, evidence package generation, file compression, retention, exports, and audit requirements.
- Design secure Azure-based document storage patterns while maintaining appropriate metadata and relationships in PostgreSQL.
PostgreSQL &
- Data Architecture
- Design normalized PostgreSQL schemas for disputes, merchants, users, alerts, evidence, comments, activities, rules, reports, notifications, compliance events, and related entities.
- Define primary keys, foreign keys, constraints, indexes, transaction boundaries, and data-retention strategies.
- Develop complex SQL queries for operational dashboards, reporting, analytics, compliance monitoring, and merchant-health calculations.
- Optimize database performance through indexing, query analysis, partitioning, and appropriate data-model decisions.
- Establish database migration and version-control processes and protect data integrity during concurrent case updates and automated workflows.
- Design approaches for historical metrics and time-series data used by dashboards and forecasting.
API Development
- Design and implement secure, versioned REST APIs for the platform frontend and external consumers.
- Establish standards for authentication, authorization, validation, pagination, filtering, sorting, searching, error handling, idempotency, rate limiting, and API versioning.
- Produce and maintain OpenAPI/API documentation and support global search across cases, merchants, rules, reports, and other platform objects.
External Integrations
- Design a reusable integration framework for payment processors, dispute and prevention networks, card-network services, merchant processing systems, notification platforms, finance systems, data warehouses, and internal business systems.
- Develop reliable webhook and API ingestion services with authentication, idempotency, retry handling, dead-letter handling, reconciliation, error recovery, monitoring, and audit trails.
Prevention Alerts &
- Automation
- Build services for alert ingestion, time-sensitive response windows, automatic refunds, declines, evidence requests, resolutions, escalations, duplicate-dispute identification, and fee-avoidance tracking.
- Design a configurable rule-processing framework for deflection, representment, prevention, routing, merchant-specific and portfolio-level rules, review modes, guardrails, execution history, success rates, and financial impact.
- Ensure automation is explainable and auditable.
Merchant Risk, Analytics &
- Compliance
- Develop backend calculations and APIs for merchant health scores, chargeback ratios, processing volume, win rates, alert volume, historical trends, root-cause analysis, portfolio KPIs, recovery rates, fee exposure, compliance thresholds, network-program monitoring, forecasting, and compliance events.
- Support configurable card-network monitoring concepts such as VAMP and ECM without hard-coding business rules that may change.
AI &
- Decision Support
- Partner with AI/data engineers to support evidence scoring, win-probability models, recommended dispute actions, AI-generated evidence packages, AI recommendations, confidence thresholds, explainability, human approval workflows, and AI audit history.
- Ensure AI recommendations remain traceable to the case and underlying source data.
Security &
- Access Control
- Design backend controls for role-based access, MFA-compatible authentication, SSO, session controls, IP restrictions, secret management, data retention, card-data redaction, signed audit exports, audit logging, and API rate limiting.
- Follow secure development practices appropriate for a payment-processing environment.
Azure Architecture &
- DevOps
- Design secure and scalable Azure deployment architecture and implement containerized or serverless Python workloads as appropriate.
- Configure application secrets using Azure Key Vault and asynchronous processing using Azure-native messaging where appropriate.
- Implement centralized logging, metrics, traces, and alerts; establish CI/CD pipelines and automated database migrations.
- Support development, QA/UAT, and production environments with high availability, recovery, scalability, and supportability in mind.
Reporting &
Background Processing
- Build backend services for scheduled and on-demand reports, CSV/XLSX/PDF data generation, recipients, schedules, execution history, operational and compliance exports, and large asynchronous data-processing jobs.
Required Qualifications
- 7+ years of professional software engineering experience.
- 5+ years of backend development experience.
- Strong production experience with Python.
- Solid experience with PostgreSQL and SQL.
- Strong Microsoft Azure experience.
- Experience designing production REST APIs and relational database schemas.
- Advanced knowledge of SQL optimization and indexing.
- Experience building asynchronous/background-processing systems.
- Experience building third-party API and webhook integrations.
- Experience with authentication and role-based authorization.
- Experience with Docker, CI/CD, observability, and secure software-development practices.
- Demonstrated experience leading technical architecture and mentoring engineers.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with payment processing, acquiring, issuing, chargebacks, or disputes.
- Fintech or financial-services experience.
- Experience with card-network or processor integrations.
- Experience with payment-risk or fraud systems.
- Experience building rules or decision engines.
- Experience with high-volume transactional systems.
- Experience supporting audit or compliance-sensitive platforms.
- Experience integrating AI/ML services into production applications.
- Experience with PostgreSQL performance tuning at scale.
What Success Looks Like The Senior Lead Backend Engineer will transform the platform from a working product concept into a secure, scalable production backend capable of supporting dispute operations, prevention, compliance, analytics, automation, reporting, and future AI capabilities. This person will establish the technical foundation upon which the rest of the backend engineering team builds.
