Role Summary The role will be responsible for the development, simulation, calibration, testing, and validation of electric motor control systems and power electronics for new EV programs. The engineer will work across motor control, battery/BMS, charging systems, CAN architecture, and powertrain efficiency, while coordinating with testing, NPD, sourcing, and supplier teams.
The role will report to the Lead – Electrical & Electronics.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop control algorithms and control strategies for electric machines including BLDC, IM, PM, and IPM motors and 3-phase switching power converters using model-based development methods.
- Perform simulation and analysis of electric drives and low-voltage power electronics.
- Plan and execute motor control algorithm development, testing, and verification using dynamometer, HIL, and SIL platforms.
- Perform motor parameter measurement, control algorithm calibration, and tuning for new motor variants on dynamometer and vehicle platforms.
- Generate and optimize motor control calibration maps based on test results and performance requirements.
- Support the design and development of EV battery and Battery Management Systems (BMS).
- Plan and execute cell balancing activities, including cell stacking and power-density calculations.
- Support the design and development of EV charging systems/chargers.
- Design and develop CAN communication architecture for EV powertrain and electrical systems.
- Identify opportunities to improve powertrain efficiency and overall system performance.
- Develop electrical and electronic systems in accordance with applicable statutory and regulatory requirements.
- Prepare and execute Design Verification Plans (DVPs) for electrical and electronic systems.
- Develop and review SOR/TRSO (Statement of Requirement / Technical Requirement Sign-Off) documentation.
- Coordinate with testing teams for wiring harness durability and reliability testing.
- Work closely with suppliers, NPD, sourcing, and cross-functional engineering teams for product development and issue resolution.
Technical Skills
- Strong fundamentals in Electrical & Electronics Engineering.
- Robust knowledge of electric motors and motor controllers.
- Working knowledge of BLDC, IM, PM, and IPM motor technologies.
- Strong understanding of motor control algorithms and control strategies.
- Knowledge of PID and PWM control techniques.
- Strong knowledge of power electronics and 3-phase power converters.
- Experience with motor simulation, calibration, tuning, and testing.
- Knowledge of dynamometer, HIL, and SIL-based testing.
- Strong understanding of EV battery systems and battery composition.
- Good knowledge of BMS architecture and battery management strategies.
- Understanding of cell balancing, cell stacking, and power-density calculations.
- Knowledge of EV charger development.
- Good understanding of CAN communication and CAN architecture.
- Knowledge of AIS-156 and applicable EV statutory requirements.
- Understanding of EMI/EMC requirements.
Must-Have Skills
- Hands-on experience in EV motor control / electric drive development.
- Strong experience with motor controllers and control algorithms.
- Experience with one or more of BLDC, IM, PM/PMSM, or IPM motors.
- Strong knowledge of PID/PWM and power electronics.
- Experience in motor calibration and dynamometer testing.
- Exposure to HIL/SIL testing and verification.
- Knowledge of EV battery and BMS systems.
- Working knowledge of CAN architecture.
- Understanding of AIS-156 and EMI/EMC requirements.
- Ability to work with suppliers, NPD, sourcing, and testing teams.
